Axtell Girls & Onaga Boys Snag TVL Basketball Wins

Twin Valley League showdown on Tuesday night saw the Axtell Eagles play host to the Onaga Buffaloes. Using a late first half run that stretched into the early part of the first half the Axtell girls grabbed a 46-29 win over Onaga, while the Buffalo boys used a trio of double figure scorers to pick up the 50-35 victory over the Eagles. 

Back and forth the game see-sawed in the first quarter between the Onaga and Axtell girls and Axtell held a 10-8 lead at the end of the first. The Buffaloes tied the game up at 12-12 and it remain that way for a bit until the final three minutes of the first half when the Eagles flew into halftime with an 11-0 run to end the second quarter and go up 23-12. Axtell continued their run over the first two minutes of the second half making it a 15-0 run before Onaga finally got on the board again and then the Buffaloes had a run of their own cutting the double figure lead down to six in the third but by the end of the quarter it was 35-25 Axtell. An 11-4 fourth quarter by Axtell finished the game for the Eagles to win 46-29. 

Axtell with the win moves to 4-9 on the season and 2-5 in TVL action and was led by Trisha Mathewson who scored 15 points, netting 11 in the second half earning her Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Anna Buessing added 11 points for the Eagles as she continues her stretch of double figure performances. 

Onaga in the loss was led by Shay Duer who posted 14 points, while Alexis VanDonge tallied nine points. The loss sends the lady Buffaloes to 0-15 on the season and 0-7 in TVL as they continue to vie for their first win of the year. 

In the boys affair Onaga came barreling out of the gates going up 8-0 but Axtell answered with a 6-0 and tied the game at 10-10 with under a minute left in the first quarter. The first quarter came to a close with a Buffalo steal and bucket to give them a 12-10 advantage. The action worked itself to 14-13 score with Onaga holding on to a one-point lead when the Buffaloes pushed the lead out to eight in the second and ultimately went into the half up 27-22. A 6-0 run to start the second half put the lead to the double figure plateau for Onaga going up 33-22 and the Buffaloes went on to outscore Axtell 13-3 in the quarter and lead 40-35 and go on to win 50-35. 

A trio of double figure scorers led Onaga on the night as they improved to 11-4 overall and 7-0 in TVL action. Tanner Marten posted 14 points, including an eight point second quarter, while both Ben Kufahl and Brendan Melvin each notched 10 points. Melvin with a pair of three's and solid game all-around earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA.

Axtell with the loss fell to 2-11 on the year and 0-7 in TVL play as Burke Deters paced the team in the loss with a season high 16 points, scoring 13 in the first half. Quinn Buessing added 13 points for Axtell on the night, also. 

Both teams continue League play on Friday night as Onaga travels to Centralia and Axtell is set to host Washington County.
