JCN Girls and Boys Sweep Horton, Each Remain Atop NEKL
By Jonny Kane

For the first half the Jefferson County North girls’ basketball looked to be in trouble against Horton up just two with their undefeated record in Northeast Kansas League play on the line.

But, the JCN girls settled down in the second half, outscoring the Chargers of Horton by six to remain unbeaten in league play with a 56-48 win Friday night.

Horton dominated the opening eight minutes for the most part, but a huge step-back 3-pointer by JCN freshman Josie Weishaar at the first quarter buzzer gave the Chargers in blue just a one-point lead after one.

Jefferson County North used the momentum of Wieshaar’s buzzer-beater into the second quarter, outscoring Horton 15-12 to take a 27-25 lead into halftime.

From there, JCN pushed the lead to six after three quarters and outscored Horton 29-23 in the second half.

Jefferson County North, 12-1 overall and 9-0 in NEKL play, now gets set to welcome Immaculata to Winchester Monday, while Horton (6-7, 6-4) travels to Immaculata Tuesday.

JCN started slow though trailing by three after the first quarter and eight at halftime. Early on in the third quarter Horton pushed their lead up to 12 and Jefferson County North looked to be in trouble.

The Chargers in green then dominated the fourth quarter outscoring Horton 19-4, while junior Brayden Summers went 5 of 7 from the free throw line to allow JCN to stay unbeaten in league play.
