JCN and Valley Falls Advance to Girls Sub-State Title Game With Dominating Wins
By Jonny Kane

2A Girls Sub-State Semifinal #1 – No. 1 JCN vs. No 4 Maranatha – (Game Broadcast)

On Feb. 10 the Jefferson County North girls’ basketball team played perhaps their worst game of the year turning the basketball over 23 times in a 46-21 loss to Valley Falls on the Dragons home floor.

Saturday night the Chargers will have a chance to avenge that loss to the Dragons and earn a spot in the Class 2A State Tournament in the process, after taking down Maranatha in the sub-state semifinals 61-29 Friday night in Valley Falls.

The Lady Eagles didn’t make things easy on the Chargers early on knocking down an early three and holding a lead for the first five minutes of the game.

JCN needed a spark and freshman Josie Wieshaar delivered knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers and scoring eight straight points to help the Chargers go on a 13-3 run to end the quarter and take a 15-8 lead into the second.

That momentum carried over into the second quarter, as the Chargers continued their run from the first scoring 16 straight points and outscoring the Lady Eagles 16-3 in the frame to take a 31-11 lead into halftime.

After the teams went back-and-forth in the third quarter, JCN pushed their lead to 30 early on in the fourth to cruise to the win.

The Chargers went just 13-of-25 from the free throw line, but made up for it knocking down six 3s in the game.

JCN (20-2) will look to make it back to state for the first time since 2014 Saturday night, after winning it all in 2012.

JCN: Josie Weishaar – 20, Kaitlyn Schneider – 11, Ravyn Jobbins – 11, Annabelle Vaught – 8, Jentry Seichepine – 5, Julie Schrick – 3, Madison Vaught – 3.

Maranatha: Shelby Adcock – 9, Morgan Wilcox – 6, Kayla Crowder – 5, Maggie Frisen – 3, Molly Welch – 2, Aaliyah Buckner – 2, Emma Prowell – 2.

2A Girls Sub-State Semifinal #2 – No. 2 Valley Falls vs. No. 3 Jackson Heights – (Game Broadcast)

The past two seasons, the Valley Falls girls’ basketball team has had the chance to experience what it feels like to win a sub-state championship and advance to the state tournament.

Saturday night the Dragons will have a chance to experience it for a third time, after knocking off Jackson Heights in the sub-state semifinals Friday night with a 38-23 win in Valley Falls.

The Dragons started fast jumping out in front with a 5-0 run to begin the game forcing a Jackson Heights timeout before eventually taking a 13-6 lead after one.

Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net in the second quarter combining to score just five points in the first six minutes. Valley Falls was able to go on another 5-0 run to end the half to take a 21-10 lead into halftime with sophomore Reagan Kirkwood notching 11 points in the half.

The Dragons put the game out of reach holding Jackson Heights to just three points in the third quarter and forcing eight turnovers in the second half outscoring the Cobras 17-13 in the final 16 minutes to wrap up the win.

Valley Falls (19-3) went just 6-of-12 from the charity stripe in the game, but held the Cobras (8-12) to single digits in every quarter except for the fourth when the game was already out of reach.

Valley Falls: Reagan Kirkwood – 13, Mallory Burns – 7, Rachel Frakes – 7, Drew DeLong – 3, Allison Kearney – 3, Mallory Jepson – 2, Laikyn Hawk – 2, Paige Wildeman – 1.

Jackson Heights: Hannah Williams – 9, Kylie Dohl – 6, Sydney Raborn – 3, Abby Williams – 3, Jodi White – 2.

This sets up the third meeting between JCN and Valley Falls this season. The Chargers took the first meeting Dec. 20, 52-51, in overtime in Winchester, while the Dragons responded dominating the Chargers Feb. 10 in Valley Falls 46-21.
