Wetmore Girls Head to State For Third Straight Year

For the third consecutive year and seventh time in school history the Wetmore Cardinals girls’ basketball team is head to the Class 1A-Division II State tournament after beating Southern Cloud 39-36 on Saturday to capture the 1A-DII Sub-State title at Axtell.

Wetmore and Southern Cloud played to a stalemate in the first quarter tied 10-10 after one but going into halftime the Cardinals found themselves down by four as Southern Cloud outscored them 5-1 to lead 15-11 at intermission. But the difference in the contest would come in the third quarter as the Cardinals flew to 18-7 quarter to gain the lead as Jill Henry paced the way in the frame with seven points in the quarter. The Cardinals went on to secure the 39-36 win.

Leading the way for Wetmore was Dakota McQueen who scored 12 points, while Henry chipped in 11 points in the Cardinal win. The win marks the 13th of the season for Wetmore putting them at 13-10 on the year.

Wetmore continues their basketball season as part of the 1A-DII State Tournament in Dodge City, Kansas at the United Wireless Arena and will play their first round game as the #8 seed taking on #1 seed Waverly (22-1) at 3:00pm on Wednesday, March 8th. (Class 1A-DII State Tournament Girls Bracket)
