Riverside Softball Opens Season With Sweep of Troy

Finally blue skies and sunshine as the rainfall stopped on Thursday and allowed spring sports to get rolling again. For the Riverside Cyclones softball team it marked the first time they hit the diamond for game action this year and they played host to the Troy Trojans. By the end of the night Riverside snagged a pair of five inning run-rule wins claiming victory 17-7 and 19-9 over Troy. 

Game one got rolling and both teams started slow stranding a base run in the first but in the top of the second a pair of errors help Troy take the initial lead of the contest going up 1-0. Riverside responded in a big way plating eight runs on six hits including a two-run homer by Payton Morgan and RBI doubles by Kallie Hawkins and Mikkia Keller and after two the Cyclones led 8-1. Troy didn't go away coming up with an answer in the top of third using three hits, two hit batters and a walk to score six runs and draw within one making it an 8-7 game. RBI singles by Maddy Guffy and Alexis Horner highlighted the Top of the third for Troy. The Cyclones would do the rest of the scoring in the contest putting up five in the third highlighted by a two RBI triple from Makenzie Koranda and then added two more in each of the fourth and fifth innings using a two RBI single by Morgan to finish the game via run-rule in the bottom of the fifth giving Riverside a 17-7 win. 

Morgan led Riverside going 3-4 with a two-run homer, double, walk and five RBI's, while Cassie Perkins and Hawkins each had a multi-hit game. Koranda earned the win in the circle going all five innings. 

For Troy in the loss they had a hit from Guffy, Alexis and Haley Horner, Kassidy Ashworth and Madeline Smith, while Andrea Stock took the loss in the circle. 

Just like in game one, game two saw Troy take the initial lead by Riverside responded and in big fashion. The Trojans behind four hits including a two RBI double by Alexis Horner scored three runs in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead. Riverside however quickly flipped the game in their favor in the bottom of the first partnering four hits with six walks to score 11 runs as every batter for the Cyclones scored at least one run in the bottom of the first. Perkins had two of the four hits in the first both two RBI singles for Riverside. Troy got a run back in the Top of the second only to see Riverside added two of their own in the bottom of the frame and lead 13-4 after two innings. Five more runs came in the third for Riverside as a two RBI triple by Hawkins highlighted the inning and Riverside led 18-4 falling one run short of the run-rule after three innings. In the fourth Riverside made a pitching change and Troy took advantage getting two runs and the Cyclones went back to the starter Koranda who pitched both games. Riverside got a single run in the fourth and in the Top of the fifth the Trojans needed four runs at least to continue the game but managed only three and the Cyclones finished the game via run-rule winning 19-9. 

Koranda once again earned the win in the circle for Riverside, while Perkins led the offense with a 2-4 game with five RBI's and also reached an error. All nine batters for Riverside recorded a hit in the game two win. 

Troy was led by a 2-2 showing by Ashworth who had two RBI's, a walk and a double, while Stock, Haley Horner and Sidney Fleek each had two hits. Fleek took the loss inside the circle. 

Riverside with the wins starts the season 2-0 and continues their year next Monday, April 10th against Hiawatha on the road in Big Seven action. While, Troy with the pair of losses fell to 0-4 to start the season and will continue their season Monday against Troy.
