Seventeen Area Baseball Players Selected to KABC All-State Teams

Plenty of competitive action throughout the 2017 high school baseball season in Northeast Kansas and 17 area baseball athletes are being honored by the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches with All-State honors after strong seasons. Two of the 17 players were even selected as "Player of the Year" in their respective classifications. 

The Troy Trojans capped the season 19-1 in Class 2-1A making their fourth consecutive State tournament and finished with their second straight third place finish at State. Five Trojan seniors earned All-State honors from the KABC with catcher, Reid Greaser leading the way earning "Player of the Year" honors in 2-1A and was selected first team All-State at catcher. Joining Greaser with first team honors is Brody Winder and Cuttar Huss at pitcher and outfield, respectively. While, Wyatt Huss earned second team All-State at closer and Wil Smith got the nod for honorable mention honors at third base. 

Valley Falls also had a trio of players earn All-State honors in Class 2-1A as seniors, Dawson Gatzemeyer and Billy Coleman each were named second team All-State at pitcher and shortstop, while freshman, Lucas Welborn picked up honorable mention honors at outfield. The Dragons finished the 2017 season with a 14-4 record. 

In Class 3A four different schools had players earn All-State honors including a "Player of the Year" honor. Marysville Bulldog senior, Jayton Haggard was selected as the 3A "Player of the Year" and earned first team honors at shortstop as Marysville finished the season 8-13. The Oskaloosa Bears made the trip to State for the first time in school history and finished the season 15-7 and had a trio of guys get postseason honors from KABC. Junior, Jared Miller earned first team honors at catcher, while senior, Cooper Thurston and sophomore, Hunter Reed were selected second team at third base and utility. Sabetha Bluejay junior, Blake Frey, Nemaha Central Thunder sophomore, Austin Gerety and Maur Hill-Mount Academy Raven senior, Noah Baniewicz each picked up first team All-State honors coming at outfield, pitcher and first base, respectively. Sabetha finished their first year of baseball 13-7, while Nemaha Central finished the year 16-4 and Maur Hill posted a record of 12-8 on the season. 

Class 4A-DI and DII each had one area player earn first team All-State honors. In Class 4A-DII Atchison Redmen senior, Adam Smith earned the honors at closer after helping Atchison finish 15-3 on the year. While Jeff West Tiger senior, Nathan Buss picked up the honors at outfield in 4A-DII after helping the Tigers finish 16-3 on the season.
