High school football season is here in Kansas and set to open up on Friday, September 1st. With the start to the season preseason rankings have been release and many area teams find themselves in the rankings or getting looks to break into their classification's Top five.

In Class 3A the Nemaha Central Thunder put together a 12-1 record last year and made a postseason run to the Sub-State round of the playoffs and this season bring back a good contingency of last year's team. Both VarsityKansas and the Topeka-Capital Journal have the Thunder slated #1 to open the season, while Kpreps slots Nemaha Central #2 to open the year behind Silver Lake. A trio of other area 3A teams are garnering attention in the polls as Sabetha, Marysville and Maur Hill-Mount Academy all teams that made the playoffs last year are in the others to consider category.

The one area team that is a consensus #1 to open the season comes in 8-Man Division I as the defending State Champions the Hanover Wildcats are preseason ranked #1. Hanover is coming off a 12-0 record last year and their first State title since 2009. In 8-Man Division II the Clifton-Clyde Eagles are in the others to consider category to open the season.

Jefferson County North Chargers led the way for area teams in Class 2-1A as they check in at #4 in the preseason rankings by Kpreps, but in the others to consider in the other polls. Five other teams are getting looks in at least one poll in Class 2-1A as defending champs, Troy along with Jackson Heights, Valley Heights, Washington County and Centralia are all in the others to consider category.

The Holton Wildcats come in at #4 in the Topeka-Capital Journal and #5 by VarsityKansas and Kpreps to open the season in Class 4A-Division II. Wildcats are coming off a 7-5 season in which they made a run to the Sub-State round of the playoffs.
