Centralia Wraps Up Football Season as Runner Up in Class 2-1A with Heartbreaking Loss to Meade
By Mike Smith

The Centralia-Wetmore Panthers had won 21 straight were the reigning Class 2-1A state champs and led by 11 points with 4:44 to go in the championship game against the Meade Buffaloes, then things unravelled for the Panthers.

Meade scored on a touchdown pass to get with five, 25-20 and then failed to recover the onside kick but forced Centralia to punt and block the short punt attempt to regain possession. After that Meade scored again, adding a two-point conversion to gain the lead 28-25 leaving only around 30 seconds for Centralia to try and make a comeback.

Needing to go to the air, junior quarterback JT Rosine connected with junior, Devin Rempe with a deep pass which was down at the 18 of Meade but there was a penalty on Centralia that negated the play and moved them backwards. After another penalty, Centralia was intercepted and that ended the game for the Panthers. Centralia finishes off the year 12-1 and Class 2-1A runner ups with a stellar season.

It was 13-7 at the half, Centralia in the lead but Meade would take a one point lead 14-13 into the fourth before Centralia scored twice to led by 11, before Meade came out with their comeback.

Centralia got the scoring going early in the game with a 46 yard TD run by Rosine and Rosine added another one on the ground in the second half on his way to a 145 yard day on 23 carries. Junior tailback, Sam Steinlage who was injured against Lyndon played well in the game for the Panthers rushing for 96 yards and a TD, with Darrian Turner tally they other score on a 27 yard run on his only carry of the game.

Panthers did have two turnovers in the ballgame, something they are accustomed to doing this year, while they only converted 5-12 third downs, too. Centralia did out rush Meade 319 to 239 but it was the Buffaloes late passing that helped them comeback against the Panthers.

While, Centralia fell in the ballgame it still was a supreme season as the Panthers finished the year 12-1 and Class 2-1A runner ups. The Panthers will a handful of seniors but bring back a great portion of this year's team to give Head Coach, Larry Glatczak and the Panthers every reason to look forward to next year on the football field and perhaps be the preseason favorite in Class 2-1A.
