Valley Falls Goes 2-0 at Horton in NEKL Battles With JCN & Horton

League play continued the high school volleyball season on Tuesday night with Horton hosting Valley Falls and Jefferson County North in Northeast Kansas League play. At the end of the night it was a 2-0 evening for Valley Falls, while JCN went 1-1 and Horton went 0-2 but lost both in grind it out three set contests. 

The battle of the Chargers got the night started as Horton led early 4-1 over JCN but it was big run by JCN the gave them control of the match as they rattled off 14-straight points even with a Horton timeout called in the middle of the run. Leading 15-4 JCN held Horton off the rest of the first set and won it 25-13. Set two was a lot different than the first as it was tied eight times and while it did feature runs it was runs by both teams. Back and forth it went until Horton put together a 6-0 run down by three to take the lead which led to a JCN timeout. Out of the JCN timeout they proceed to go on a 6-0 run and took the lead back. Now down by three again Horton put together a 4-0 run to lead 22-21 and went on to grab set two 25-23. On to set three the match went and Horton held a 5-2 early lead but the match featured many ties and a pair of 5-0 JCN runs to help them to the set three win 25-20 to take the match. JCN was led by Ravyn Jobbins who had multiple kills, while Annabelle Vaught stepped in with strong plays and the libero, Sammi Hughes played strong as she was at the helm of the serve during the 14-0 run in set one. Horton in the loss was led by Daspin Bruning, while Callie Hoobler and Tatum Lockwood both made strong plays. 

In the second matchup of the night Valley Falls took on JCN in a showdown of the two teams that have set atop the NEKL standings the past few years. Dragons established early control in set one with a 6-1 lead and that lead just continued to grow for Valley Falls going up to 17-10 when JCN called their second timeout of the set. Eventually the lead went up to double figures and Valley Falls used that cushion to grab set one 25-16. Set two saw an early 6-2 advantage for Valley Falls but JCN fought back multiple times drawing within one at three different points but the Dragons held the Chargers offe and went on an 8-0 run late to lead 23-14 and ultimately took the second set 25-17 to win the match. Jaci Brinker and Reagan Kirkwood helped spear head the Dragons success in the contest with strong play from Drew Delong and Allison Kearney to set the way. JCN in the loss again had solid play from both Hughes and Jobbins, while Kynnedi Knudson stepped in with several plays. 

The nightcap proved to be just as good as the start of the night with another thrilling three set showdown as the host on the night Horton took on Valley Falls. Tied early in set one at 6-6 Valley Falls took control going up 13-9 but Horton fought back and drew within one at 16-15 and tied the set at 17-17. The Chargers despite tying the set were never able to take control and Valley Falls went on to take the first set 25-19. Set two saw Horton establish an early five point lead going up 10-5 and the Chargers used that throughout the set to hold off Valley Falls closing out the second set for the 25-20 set two win as Kaitlyn McAfee had an ace for set point. Set three Valley Falls led 7-1 early and appeared to be in control but came back and tied contest at 10-10 and took an 11-10 lead. Valley Falls went on a 4-0 run to lead 14-11 with and went on to grab the set three win 25-20 and take the match. Rachel Frakes was strong upfront for the Dragons in the win, while Brinker and Kirkwood had strong performances and Paige Wildeman played well. In the loss Bruning was again helping lead the way for Horton, while McAfee and Ally Bottom both played well. 

The pair of wins moves Valley Falls to 17-5 on the season and 9-0 in NEKL action, while JCN with a 1-1 night moved to 14-6 and 6-2 in League play and Horton fell to 8-14 overall and 2-7 in the NEKL.
