Centralia Sweeps USD 380 Battle With Frankfort

Back at it after the holiday break it was the battle of USD 380 that got the basketball season rolling again for Centralia and Frankfort as the Panthers played host. The girl’s game saw Centralia hold off Frankfort for the 43-37 overtime win, while Centralia boys distanced themselves late to secure the 55-42 win over Frankfort. 

GIRLS 

Centralia pounced on the early lead against Frankfort working out to a 7-0 lead over the first 3:30 minutes of the game. By the end of the first quarter the lead was double figures for the Panthers as they led 12-2 as Frankfort managed only two free throws in the first stanza. The struggle offensively continued for Franfort in the second quarter and Centralia extended their lead to 27-15 at halftime as the Wildcats shot under 20% from the floor in the first half. While it was the Madison Lueger and Katie Glatczak show offensively for the Panthers in the first accounting for 25 of the teams 27 points in the half.

A tight third quarter ultimately saw the Panthers push their lead up by one-point entering the fourth up 13. Frankfort hunkered down and started their comeback in the fourth by chipping at the lead and dwindling it to a 37-32 hole with 3:35 left in the game. The Wildcats tied the contest at 37-37 with 1:28 left and Centralia took the clock down looking for the last shot. In the final 10 seconds Glatczak had the ball poked away by Jessa Yaussi who scooped it up and found Mariah Broxterman who went to the basket and was fouled with 1.4 seconds left. Broxterman missed the first and made the second to give Frankfort their first lead but it was wiped away because of a lane violation. Centralia tired a half-court heave but it fell short and to overtime the game went. After a 13-0 fourth quarter by Frankfort it was Centralia that did all the scoring in overtime posting a 6-0 four minutes to earn the 43-37 win. 

Centralia with the win improved to 7-0 on the season and 6-0 in Twin Valley League action extending their TVL win streak to 31-straight. Lueger and Glatczak led the Panthers scoring netting 20 and 14 points, respectively accounting for 79% of the teams points on the night both earning Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on 92.1 KMZA. 

Frankfort in the loss was led by Emilee Ebert who scored 14 points, while Kennen Brandt tallied 13 points. The loss is the first of the season for the Wildcats as they fall to 7-1 and 3-1 in TVL action. 

Both teams continue the season on Friday night as Centralia will travel to Hanover and Frankfort will head to Randolph to play Blue Valley.

BOYS

Centralia took an early 7-2 lead and used that to hold Frankfort at bay throughout the game before extending their lead to earn the win. Panthers led 11-8 after the first quarter and worked their lead to 20-8 in the second quarter but behind a pair of three pointers by Austin Hardwick Frankfort cut the lead to four at the half trailing just 23-19. After a nearly even third quarter that saw Centralia slightly add to their lead the Panthers saw their lead go up to nine several times but Frankfort cut it to three points only to see Centralia answer as the Panthers finished the game strong with a 21-15 fourth quarter to earn the 55-42 win. 

Both Daegan Steinlage and Dylan Boeckman made clutch plays in the fourth and second half of the game. Steinlage who picked up two early fouls and didn't play much at all in the first half was riddle with foul trouble the whole game but still finished with a game high 12 points. While Boeckman had a pair of clutch layups in the fourth to stymie Frankfort runs and tied his season high with 11 points. The duo of Steinlage and Boeckman were each named Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" on 92.1 KMZA. The win moved Centralia to 6-1 on the season and 4-1 in TVL play. 

Frankfort with the loss fell to 2-6 and 2-2 in TVL action. The Wildcats were led by a trio of guys who tallied 11 points each in Brandon Anderson, Austin Hardwick and Garret Dalinghaus. 

Both teams continue the season on Friday night as Centralia will travel to Hanover and Frankfort will head to Randolph to play Blue Valley.
