Sabetha Starts New Year with Basketball Sweep at Hiawatha

It was the first games of 2018 for Big 7 rivals Sabetha and Hiawatha on Friday night, but in their initial meeting of this season, the Bluejays got both wins to improve their records to 4-3. 

GIRLS = Sabetha 54, Hiawatha 14

The Sabetha girls never trailed and won every quarter including a 19-7 first frame.  The Jays were up 19 points at halftime and stretched the margin to 44-14 after three periods to force a running clock throughout the final frame.  Morgan Schuette scored 13 points while Jessica Payne added 12 and Sabetha had 10 of their 11 varsity girls score at least two points while improving to 4-3 on the season.  Hiawatha was led by Jaye Hrencher with seven of the teams 14 points and the Redhawks struggled with 24 turnovers while falling to 1-5 on the year. 

BOYS = Sabetha 48, Hiawatha 39

The Hiawatha boys held a couple six point leads in the first half but trailed 25-23 at intermission after Andrew Lierz hit a long trey to beat the halftime buzzer.  Both teams struggled in the third quarter on offense with the Bluejays holding a 33-29 advantage into the fourth.  Joe Gruber scored 8 of his 14 points in the final stanza and Sabetha made seven free throws down the stretch to expand their lead to double figures and ultimately take a 48-39 win.  Gabe Garber had a huge night of the bench creating havoc a top the 1-3-1 zone and scoring 16 points including a pair of treys and going 10-10 from the charity stripe.  Brett Stallbaumer also hit a couple three’s and finished with seven points as Sabetha improved to 4-3.  Hiawatha got 13 points from Lierz before he fouled out and Tyler Brockoff added 12 while Hunter Pavlish scored six before the Redhawks dropped to 0-6 on the season with their third loss by single digits.
