Wetmore Cardinals Fly High In Road Sweep of Onaga

After getting back to basketball out of the holiday break earlier in the week Wetmore and Onaga squared off against each other on Friday night and on National bird day it was the Cardinals flying high to a road sweep. The Wetmore girls earned the 43-12 win, while the Wetmore boys snagged a 55-30 win. 


It was a slow start to the contest as both teams tried to settle in but it was Wetmore establishing an early lead and led 11-6 after the first quarter. Onaga cut the lead to two on a Belinda Ames and-one bucket making 11-9 early in the second quarter. Wetmore had an answer with an 8-0 spurt to on up 19-9 and behind a 14-5 second quarter overall pushed themselves into halftime up 25-11. Wetmore controlled the second half adding to their lead with an 11-1 third quarter and then finished the game with a 7-0 fourth to grab the 43-12 win. 

Wetmore with the win moved to 4-3 on the season and 2-3 in Twin Valley League play. Jill Henry led the Cardinals on the night notching 13 points with nine in the second half earning her Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on 92.1 KMZA. Both McKayla Henry and Jossie Shumaker each chipped in eight points.

Onaga in the loss was led by Laura Krohn who scored four points as the Buffaloes fell to 0-7 on the season and 0-3 in TVL play. 


Wetmore flew out to an early 8-0 start taking advantage of their athleticism early and taking advantage of Onaga turnovers. The lead grew to as many as 12 in the first quarter and was eight at 19-11 at the end of the frame. The Cardinals started the second quarter flying all over the court just like the start of the game going on a 7-0 run to extend their lead and ultimately enter halftime up 32-16. Onaga out of halftime came out with a 6-0 run to close to within 10 points but Wetmore had an answer with an 8-0 run and a bucket in the final seconds of the quarter by Onaga kept the lead for the Cardinals at 16 points. Wetmore finished the game strong with a 15-6 fourth to secure the win at 55-30. 

With the win Wetmore improves to 2-5 on the season and 2-3 in the TVL. The Cardinals were led by Ethan Osterhaus who scored 15 points; while Joel Hutfles netted 14 points and the duo earn Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors together on 92.1 KMZA. Jonathan Hlady-Bailey chipped in eight points, while both Curtis Bloom and Kael McQueen each scored seven points. 

Onaga in the loss was led by Tanner Marten who scored seven points as the Buffaloes fell to 1-7 on the season and 0-3 in the TVL.
