Axtell Girls Use Strong Third Quarter & Wetmore Boys Hold Off Axtell For Wins

Looking to build momentum headed into the Twin Valley League tournament that starts Saturday it was the Axtell girls and Wetmore boys notching wins on Tuesday to put together a winning streak. The Axtell girls used a dominate third quarter to earn the 52-36 win, while the Wetmore boys established a lead and held of Axtell's advances to secure the 48-45 win. 

GIRLS 

The game opened with both teams trading buckets throughout most of the first quarter but neither team settling in until Axtell finished the first stanza strong and held a 12-6 lead after the first quarter. Up 14-8 Axtell saw Wetmore call a timeout to settle things down and the Cardinals answered out of the timeout with a 7-0 run to take a 15-14 lead and where up 21-18 in the final seconds of the first half until Hanna Schmitz swiped the ball and made a layup for Axtell for the buzzer to make 21-20 at the half. Wetmore clinging to to a one-point didn't see it last long in the second half as Axtell opened the second half on a 9-0 run over the first two and half minutes of play in the third leading to a 29-21 lead and a Wetmore timeout. The lead continued to expanded in the third as Axtell posted a 23-4 quarter to take firm control of the game and ultimately earn the 52-36 win. 

It was a balanced night for Axtell with six gals scoring and five of the girls with seven or more points each. Kinsey Feldkamp led the way with 12 points her first double figure performance this season, while both Schmitz and Olivia Kuckelman each tallied 11 points. Schmitz who helped spear head a strong defensive showing by Axtell earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on 92.1 KMZA. The win moves Axtell to 3-5 on the season and 3-2 in TVL play as the Eagles have won 3 of the last four games. 

Wetmore with the loss falls to 4-4 on the year and 2-4 in TVL action. Jill Henry led the Cardinals with 16 points on the evening. 

Both teams now gear up for the Twin Valley League tournament which is set to start on Saturday, January 13th with first round action at Onaga.

BOYS

After a nearly a few minutes rolled off the clock Axtell opened the scoring with a free throw by Hunter Koch but Wetmore proceed with the next five points to lead 5-1 in the first quarter. The lead changed hands several times in the first but at the end of the quarter Wetmore led 11-10. The Cardinals extended their lead to four by halftime going up 21-17 behind the scoring of Joel Hutfles and Ethan Osterhaus who had 10 and 11 points, respectively at the half for Wetmore. Wetmore grew the lead to as high as eight in the third quarter only to see Axtell push back and be down just three entering the fourth. The lead once again grew this time to a game high nine at 45-36 with 2:05 left to go in the contest but Axtell didn't go away clawing back and had opportunities late. Osterhaus made one of two free throws in the final seconds to make it a three-point game and Axtell down three in the final seconds tossed a three-quarter-court pass that was intercepted and Wetmore won 48-45. 

Wetmore has now won two in a row with to improve to 3-5 on the season and 3-3 in TVL play. The Cardinals were led by Hutfles who poured in 24 points tying his season high, while Osterhaus chipped in 16 points. Hutfles performance earned him Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on 92.1 KMZA. Jonathan Hlady-Bailey added seven points with a pair of timely three-pointers in the third quarter. 

Axtell in the loss was led by Quinn Buessing who scored 15 points, while Hunter Koch scored 13 points. The Eagles with the loss fell to 2-6 on the season and 1-4 in TVL action.

Both teams now gear up for the Twin Valley League tournament which is set to start on Saturday, January 13th with first round action at Onaga.
