2018 TVL Basketball Tournament -- Boys Semifinals & More

The 2018 Twin Valley League tournament continued on Thursday night with the boys Semifinals and more.

Boys 

#4 Centralia vs. #1 Doniphan West -- Doniphan West won 60-49

Doniphan West held off Centralia's advances and pushed the their lead out in the second half to earn the 60-49 win. The Mustangs went up 8-2 early but Centralia tied it late in the quarter and Doniphan West led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter. Centralia took their first lead 17-16 early in the second quarter but by halftime Doniphan West led 31-25. The lead grew to 36-25 with 6:53 left in the third quarter for the Mustangs but Centralia answered with a 7-0 run to get right back into the contest. The lead grew back to double digits in the fourth for Doniphan West to grab the 60-49 win. 

Devin Taylor put on a show early scoring 13 of Doniphan West's first 16 points and netting 25 points in the game to earn Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on 92.1 KMZA. Levi Watts added 13 points for Doniphan West, while Clayton Ridout scored 11 points and Doniphan West improved to 10-0 on the season and moves into the Championship game. Centralia fell to 8-4 on the the and was led by Kamble Haverkamp with 11 points and Josh Hasenkamp scored 10 points. 

#3 Clifton-Clyde vs. #2 Hanover -- Hanover won 81-57

Hanover pounced early on Clifton-Clyde and the Eagles could not overcome the strong start to the game by the Wildcats as Hanover won 81-57. Up 13-4 with 3:29 left in the first quarter Clifton-Clyde called a timeout but by the end of the first quarter Hanover led 24-12. Hanover expanded the lead in the second quarter by the hands of Carlos Emanuel who posted 12 first half points and helped the Wildcats lead 42-25 at the half. Hanover cruised in the second half to take the win. 

The win moves Hanover to 9-0 on the year and into the TVL Tournament Championship game. Emanuel led the Wildcats with 18 points earning Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on 92.1 KMZA. Brennan Zabokrtsky netted 15 points, while Carter Bruna scored 14 points and Pete Peters scored 10 points. 

Loss moves Clifton-Clyde to 10-2 on the year and into the TVL Tournament third place game. Zach Sorell led the Eagles with 19 points, while Bradley Koch netted 11 points. 

#12 Washington County vs. #8 Axtell -- Axtell won 49-39

Axtell used a strong finish to take the win over Washington County earning the 49-39 win. Washington County owned the lead 13-11 after the first quarter but the Eagles flew in front by halftime with a 14-8 second quarter to lead 25-21. The contest was tied after three quarters of play and Axtell then finished the game with a 16-6 fourth quarter to take the game. A trio of double figure scorers led Axtell as Hunter Koch and Jonah Porting each scored 13 points and Quinn Buessing netted 10 points helping Axtell move to 4-7 on the year and into the fifth place game of the Tournament. 

Washington County with the loss fell to 2-10 on the season and into the seventh place game of the tournament. Tyler Nelson and Riley Moore each posted 10 points to lead the Tigers. 

#7 Wetmore vs. #6 Valley Heights -- Valley Heights won 68-58

Trailing early Valley Heights battled and used a strong game from the free throw line to earn the 68-58 win over Wetmore. Behind a 13 point first quarter by Joel Huftles Wetmore led 17-11 over Valley Heights but a 19-14 second quarter by the Mustangs made it a 31-29 game at the half with Wetmore holding the slim lead. Valley Heights took the lead with a 23-15 third quarter hitting five three-pointers in the quarter and finished the game with a 16-11 fourth to take the win. 

Valley Heights finished 20-22 from the free throw line as they improved to 5-6 on the the season. Cameron Beardsley led the Mustangs with 22 points, while Jeremy Reed scored 17 points helping the team move into the fifth place game of the tournament. Wetmore with the loss fell to 4-7 and into the seventh place game of the tournament. Hutfles led Wetmore with 28 points in the loss. 

#13 Troy vs. #5 Linn -- Linn won 44-31

Linn used a solid start to game and second half to push past Troy for a 44-31 win in the TVL consolation tournament game. The Bulldogs led 10-4 after the first quarter and it was 21-15 at the half. Linn added to their lead behind a 10-4 third quarter and used that cushion to take the game. The Bulldogs with the win move to 5-4 on the season as Dillon Cooper and Evan Bott each scored 12 points to lead the way, while Tanner Spence chipped in 11 points. Troy with the loss fell to 0-9 and was led by Reid Jasper who scored 13 points.
