Valley Heights Sweeps the Battle of Mustangs Beating Doniphan West

It was a battle of Mustangs in the Twin Valley League on Tuesday night and it was the home team in Valley Heights that hit their stride and galloped to a pair of wins on the evening. Valley Heights girls won handily 68-29 over Doniphan West, while Valley Heights boys held off Doniphan West to win 56-48 and hand Doniphan their first loss of the year. 

GIRLS 

Valley Heights ran out of the gates to an 18-2 start behind offensive contributions from five different girls in the first quarter and Doniphan West struggled from the floor. The woes continued for Doniphan West in the second quarter while Valley Heights continued to take advantage of turnovers and turn them into points outscoring Doniphan West 23-6 in the second to lead 41-8 at the half. That lead grew a little more in the third quarter and Valley Heights went on to coast to their eighth win in the last nine games notching the 68-29 win. 

Kayla Smith set the tone for Valley Heights with 18 points and earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on 92.1 KMZA, while both Emma Toerber and Sam Vermetten each registered double figures scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively. The win moves Valley Heights to 11-4 on the season and 6-1 in Twin Valley League play. 

The loss pushes Doniphan West to 6-9 on the year and 3-5 in TVL action. Makinley Smith led Doniphan West posting 14 points including a 8-10 night from the free throw line. 

Both teams continue their season on Friday, February 2nd as Doniphan West travels to Blue Valley-Randolph and Valley Heights hosts Mission Valley.

BOYS

It was a tight ballgame throughout but once Valley Heights established the lead early they held it most of the way against Doniphan West ultimately earning the 56-48 win. Valley Heights led 13-10 after the first quarter and carried a 29-22 advantage into halftime. The lead grew to as many as 11 points in the third quarter for Valley Heights but was only six entering the fourth stanza. Doniphan West pushed again and this time pushed them into the lead at 43-42 with 5:40 remaining. The lead jumped back to Valley Heights on a Jeremy Reed bucket on an inbound play making it 44-43 with 4:19 remaining and Valley Heights held off Doniphan West the rest of the way making some free throws down the stretch to help secure the win. 

The victory moves Valley Heights to 8-7 on the season and 5-2 in the Twin Valley League as Jeremy Reed and Bryan Yungeberg led the team on the night with 17 and 14 points, respectively. The duo both earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on 92.1 KMZA. 

Doniphan West in the loss was led by Newt Smith who tallied 19 points in the contest. The loss is the first of the season for Doniphan West putting them at 13-1 on the year and 7-1 in TVL action. 

Both teams continue their season on Friday, February 2nd as Doniphan West travels to Blue Valley-Randolph and Valley Heights hosts Mission Valley.
