Centralia Panthers Sweep Valley Heights On the Road

Twin Valley League play continued as Valley Heights hosted Centralia on Friday night for a basketball doubleheader. The Panthers came away with a pair of victories earning the sweep as the Centralia girls won 78-56 and the boys won 47-41. 

GIRLS 

Tight early it was a strong third quarter by Centralia that decided the game as Valley Heights led 9-4 early and held a 17-15 lead after the first quarter. Centralia tied the game at 23-23 with just over four minutes left in the first half and by halftime swung the lead in their favor leading 32-30. Each team had a double figure scorer by halftime as Morgan Kramer netted 13 first half points and Kayla Smith posted 14 points in the first half. The Panthers took control of the game behind a 30-15 third quarter capitalizing on opportunities at the rim and racking up the points in the paint as both Madison Lueger and Maegan Koch each had nine points in the quarter. Centralia went on to secure the 78-56. 

Kramer paced the Panthers with a new season high 27 points going 8-9 from the free throw line earning Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Lueger added 21 points while both Koch and Katie Glatczak chipped in double figures with 11 and 13 points, respectively. The Panthers also went 18-21 from the free throw line in the game to help them improve to 14-2 on the season and 9-1 in Twin Valley League action. 

In the loss Valley Heights was led by Smith who scored 26 points, while DeAndra Woodyard scored 12 points. The loss sends the Mustangs to 12-5 on the season and 6-2 in the TVL. 

Valley Heights is in action on Monday, February 12th in a make-up game at Troy, while Centralia will next be in action on Tuesday, February 13th at home versus Marysville.

BOYS

Six of the last seven meetings between Centralia and Valley Heights boys were decided by single digits and Friday night’s contest was no different as it was tight throughout with the Panthers securing the win. After the first quarter Valley Heights held a 10-7 lead but with an 11-7 second quarter it was Centralia up at the half leading 18-17. The Panthers managed to add to their lead in the third quarter going up by six at 35-29 and went on to secure the 47-41 win over Valley Heights. 

The duo of Kamble Haverkamp and Dylan Boeckman led Centralia with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Haverkamp helped lead the way early with eight first half points and earned Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" honors on KMZA. Daegan Steinlage added nine points as Centralia moved to 10-7 on the season and 7-3 in Twin Valley League action. 

Loss moves Valley Heights to 9-8 on the year and 5-3 in the TVL. The Mustangs were led by Jeremy Reed who scored 12 points, while Bryan Yungeberg tallied 11 points. 

Valley Heights is in action on Monday, February 12th in a make-up game at Troy, while Centralia will next be in action on Tuesday, February 13th at home versus Marysville.
