Valley Falls & Frankfort Boys Pick Up First Round Sub-State Wins

Postseason high school basketball started up on Monday night across Kansas with opening round action of Sub-State basketball. In Class 1A-Division I six area teams are competing at the Frankfort Sub-State for the right to make the the 1A-DI State tournament in Hays. In the opening round of the boys action Valley Falls topped Onaga 54-46, while Frankfort beat Troy 58-40. 

Valley Falls 54-46 over Onaga

Early establishment of a post presence led Valley Falls to a 12-4 lead in the first quarter and the Dragons led 14-9 after the first quarter with Hunter Aspinwall dominating the early portion of the contest scoring 10 points himself for the Dragons. Aspinwall's dominance continued in over the course of the matchup continually getting shots inside at the rim and by halftime he had 18 points and led Valley Falls to a 25-19 lead at intermission over Onaga. The lead grew to double figures for the first time at 29-19 in the third quarter by the end of three Valley Falls led 37-28. Onaga didn't go away as Tanner Marten and crew did their best to remain close cutting the lead to three at 39-36 with four minutes remaining but the Dragons had an answer again once more spear headed by Aspinwall to finish the game strong for the 54-36 win. 

The win marks the third in a row for Valley Falls improving them to 6-15 on the season. Aspinwall proved to be a beast for the Dragons notching 33 points and dominating the contest and earning Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" on KMZA radio, while Seth Delong finished with eight points. 

Onaga finishes their season with a 4-16 record and was led by Marten who tallied 20 points, while Quinton Norris added 10 points. 

Valley Falls now moves on to a matchup with Doniphan West in the Sub-State Semifinals on Thursday, March 1st at 6:00pm at Frankfort. 

Frankfort 58-40 over Troy

The Wildcats of Frankfort pounced early running out to a 7-0 lead over the first two minutes of the contest and worked up to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter but lead just 17-11 after one quarter. Frankfort pushed the lead back to double figures with a 5-0 spurt to open the second quarter making it 22-11 but a 7-0 run by Troy cut the lead to 22-18 and we headed into halftime with Frankfort leading 28-22. The Wildcats showcased some strong balance in the scoring frame and used a 14-9 third and 16-9 fourth quarter to ultimately take the contest over Troy, 58-40. 

A trio of double figure scorers led Frankfort as Garret Dalinghaus posted a season high 19 points including an eight point fourth quarter to led the Wildcats and earn Community National Bank "Player to Bank On" on KMZA radio. Brandon Anderson chipped in 14 points, while Mitchell Olson scored 13 points. The win marks the fourth in a row for Frankfort and moves them to 9-12 on the season. 

The loss wraps up the season for Troy with a 2-18 record. Reid Jasper led Troy in the loss with 19 points, while Kipp Jasper scored 12 points. 

Frankfort with the win moves into the Sub-State Semifinals on Thursday, March 1st to take on Centralia at 7:30pm.
