Redhawks and Chargers Split Overtime Thrillers
By Justin Fluke

The 2012-13 High School Basketball season tipped off with the traditional "Brown County Brawl" on Friday night in the Roundhouse as both girls and boys games went to overtime tied at 41.  The Horton girls came away with a 47-43 win, while the Hiawatha boys prevailed 48-44 as a pair of new coaches guided their team to victory. Hiawatha had players hit a buzzer-beating shot in both contest to send the crowd into a frenzy and the games into an extra four-minute session.

GIRLS
The game featured 16 lead changes and 8 ties as Horton closed a back-and-forth second quarter by grabbing a 25-20 halftime lead.  Hiawatha came back and won the third quarter 33-29 before the Chargers went ahead in the fourth frame on a trey by Mariah Hisle.  Trailing 41-39 with :14 left, Hiawatha missed a three-point, shot but Miracle Clark grabbed a lose ball rebound and put it in as time expired.  That gave Hiawatha and first-year Coach Jolene Kabriel a chance to snap a 22 game losing streak, which included a winless campaign a year ago.  However, after making onl 12 of 32 free throws in regulation, Horton hit 4 of 6 in overtime to secure the win.  Hisle earned Citizens State Bank and Trust Company "Player to Bank on" honors with a team high 12 points, half of which came in the  final quarter.  Sarah Coversup added 9, while Loagan Rodvelt and Keeley Cowley chipped in 6 each to give Coach Ken Shippy a win in his return to the sidelines.  Hiawatha was plagued by 30 turnovers, but they did hit four treys and had 8 players score.  Freshman, Emily Gartner got the start and posted double-double in her first high school game with a game-high 16 points.  Sophia Fortmeyer added 12.

BOYS
Hiawatha scored the first six points of the game and led throughout the first half, clinging to a 22-20 advantage at the break.  Horton went on an 11-0 run to begin the third quarter and led 33-26 entering the fourth.  They maintained the lead despite Hiawatha typing the contest at 37 with 1:58 remaining on Dominic Goodwin's third triple of the night.  The game was tied at 39 before Trey Dishon connected with :20 left to keep Horton in front 41-39.  After a timeout, Hiawatha's Taylor Lee struggled to get off a guarded shot from the foul-line as time expired, but he made it to force overtime.  Hiawatha hit 7 of 10 foul-shots in the extra time to get the 48-44 win for first-year Coach Andrew Eckert.  Lee had 14 points while Goodwin added 11 and Conner Bigham chipped in 7 of his 9 points in the final 10 minutes.  Horton committed 22 turnovers and got 13 points each from Dishon and Josh Allen, who came off the bench and scored the Chargers first five points of the game.  Horton was only 1 of 8 from the charity stripe in fourth quarter and overtime.
