Sabetha Takes Down Marysville in Rematch of 3A Title Game

Marysville, Kansas was the location for a rematch of the 3A State Football Championship Game. Defense was the key as Sabetha would get an interception by Gabe Garber in that game to claim the 3A State title by a final score of 7-6. This time not only were both defense's key to the game, but both offense's played a bigger role than a season before.

Marysville would start the game with their first drive, which led to a three and out. After punting the football it would then be Sabetha's turn. On Sabetha's first drive they would go three and out as well. Both teams would again exchange punts, before a fumble by Marysville's offense on their own 39 yard line would lead to the first score of the game. Sabetha would only use six plays before Gabe Garber would score from five yards out which put Sabetha up 7-0.

Marysville would then be forced to punt again, which gave Sabetha the ball on their own 22 yard line. On the third play of the drive Mason Engelken would scamper away for a 75 yard touchdown run, which put Sabetha up 14-0. On Marysville's fifth drive of the game Brandon Schroedl would throw the first of his three interceptions in the game. Sabetha however would fumble the football, and Garron Champoux would pick it up and return it 80 yards to the house for Marysville's first score of the game, but the 2pt conversion attempt was unsuccessful which made the score 14-6.

Sabetha then fumbled again which Marysville recoverd and their offense would use 7 plays before Atreyau Hornbeak ran it in from 5 yards out, however the 2pt conversion to tie the game was unsuccessful which made the score 14-12. Sabetha then used just three plays before Braeden Cox hauled in a 55 yard pass from Gabe Garber for a touchdown, which put Sabetha up 22-12.

Sabetha started the 2nd half with the football, and only needed eight plays before Joe Gruber would power his way into the endzone form six yards out and put the Bluejays up 29-12. Brandon Schroedl then threw the second interception of his three thrown in the game, which would turn into Sabetha's last score of the game. Joe Gruber would be called on once more this time breaking away for a 30 yard touchdown run, making the score 36-12.

The Bluejays had a total of 396 yards in the ball game. Senior Mason Engelken again led the way with 143 yards on just 6 carries and a touchdown, while senior Joe Gruber toted the ball 23 times for 109 total yards and two touchdowns. Junior Gabe Garber had 12 carries for 57 yards and one rushing touchdown, while he also threw the ball just 4 times for 83 total yards passing and a touchdown on the 55 yard pass to Senior Braeden Cox.

Marysville had a total of 282 yards in the game, and were led by junior running back Atreyau Hornbeak who had 20 totes and 99 yards rushing, while recording 14 yards receiving as well. Brandon Schroedl had 12 yards rushing and went 11-19 passing for 85 yards and three interceptions throwing the ball. Jacob Backus had 44 receiving yards in the game for Marysville.

Sabetha claims the victory in the 3A State Championship rematch and are (4-0) overall and (1-0) in district play. Sabetha will be at Hiawathia next week for a Big 7 League and District play mathcup with the Redhawks, as Marysville falls to (2-2) overall and (0-1) in district play and will play host to Wamego next week.
