2017-18 Coaches of the Year – Honoree List.

The Kansas Coaches Association has announced their 2017-2018 Coach of the Year by sport list, and two area coaches picked up Coach of the Year honors.

In the 11-man football category, Sabetha head man Garrett Michael picked up the Coach of the Year honors after leading the Bluejays to a 3A State Championship last season with a 7-6 win over Marysville in the title game.

Michael led the Bluejays to a 13-1 overall record and 7-1 Big 7 league record last season, which was good enough for second in the league. He’s in his 10th season as the head man at Sabetha, while also in his 22nd year total with the Bluejays.

Michael started as Sabetha in 1997, and in his head coaching career has a record of 62-44.

In the volleyball category, Centralia head coach Kimbrook Tennal was named the Coach of the Year after leading the Panthers to a 43-1 record and a 1A-DI State Championship last season.

Tennal, a 2017 Kansas Volleyball Association Hall of Fame inductee, has been the head man of the Panthers since 2007 and at Centralia since 1997.

In ‘97 Tennal was hired with his wife at Centralia to coach volleyball and together they won eight State titles in a row and had a 126 match win streak ranking second best in the State. Tennal took over in ‘07 as the head coach and led Centralia to three State titles and four State runner-up finishes, while amassing a career coaching record of 724-48 in volleyball.
