Area Runners and Teams Qualify for State Cross Country Meets

The high school cross country season continued Saturday with the regional meets for all classifications and a few area teams along with several individuals punched their tickets to the state meet next week. The top 10 runners in each regional advanced to state.

In Class 4A just one area runner advanced to the state meet at Wamego Country Club, as Atchison’s Addalyn Collins took sixth in the girl’s race with a time of 20:46.34.

In Class 3A two schools had both girls and boys teams qualify for the state meet, as the Hiawatha girls and boys each took second while the Sabetha girls and boys took third at the Sabetha regional meet.

The Hiawatha girls had three runners inside of the top 10, as Elizabeth Kettler led the way taking second with a time of 21:16.55 while Mary Rosa took third and Katherine Madsen fourth.

The Sabetha girls had three runners inside of the top 11, as Hattie Lukert won the meet with a time of 21:03.64 while Jadyn Dorn took 10th and Skylar McAfee 11th.

On the boys side of the 3A regional meet Hiawatha had just one runner inside of the top10, as Justin Hodge took second with a time of 16:53.24 which was nine seconds behind the first place finisher.

Sabetha meanwhile finished with one runner in the top 10 as well, as Kaden Dillon took 10th.

Perry Lecompton and Maur Hill-Mount Academy each had one runner finish in the top 10 earning spots at state, as the Kaws had Josh Mitts take eighth while the Ravens had Ayden Black take ninth.

In the 2A Wabaunsee regional two more area teams earned the right to go to state, as the Jeff County North girls and Jackson Heights boys each took third place.

The JCN girls were led by Zetta Noll who took ninth, while the Jackson Heights girls also had Faith Little take fifth and Annie Allen eighth to also make it to state.

McLouth also had two runners make it to state with Reagan Clark taking second and Baylee Wolfe seventh, while ACCHS had Victoria Caplinger qualify with a sixth place finish.

On the boys side of the 2A race Jackson Heights and Jeff County North each had runners finish in the top five, as the Chargers had Trevor Pentlin take second with a time of 18:14.32 while the Cobras’ Daniel Little was two seconds behind in third.

McLouth also had two guys qualify for state, as Jared Plake took sixth and August Forsberg ninth.

In the 1A Washington County regional the Clifton-Clyde and Centralia girls teams took third and fourth to qualify for state, while on the boys side Axtell took second, Frankfort third and Centralia fourth to qualify.

On the girls side only three area runners finished inside of the top 10, as Washington County had Natalie Roepke take second, Olivia Kuckelman of Axtell fourth and Doniphan West’s Elle Williams 10th.

The boy’s race saw five runners inside of the top 10, as Axtell had two guys with Quinn Buessing leading the way taking fifth while Simon Schmitz also took ninth.

Washington County also had Tyler Simmons take seventh, while Franfort had Colton Parthemer take eighth and Valley Falls’ Noah Hefty 10th.

Each respective state meet is scheduled to take place Saturday, October 27 with classes 4A, 2A and 1A at Wamego Country Club and 3A at Rim Rock Farms in Lawrence.
