The Sabetha Bluejays have now won 17 straight football games and next up on their 3A State Championship title defense is a road trip to Parsons in the quarterfinals. It's the 11th straight playoff run for Coach Garrett Michael and the Bluejays, while for Parsons its just their second winning season in the last 15 years. Alum, Kurt Friess returned to Parsons as the head coach this year and guided the team to the first playoff win since 1976. Parsons (8-2) with losses to Frontenac and undefeated Galena this year, beat Girard 6-0 and last week won at Prairie View 38-23 to advance.

The Vikings are led by senior QB Gage Friess with 1,742 yards passing and 24 touchdowns to just five interceptions. He also has 712 rushing yards and six trips to pay-dirt. Six different receivers have at least 10 catches and more than 160 yards with a lot of speed on the field. In fact, the team has all four members of last year's 4x100 state runner up athletes on the field and Joel Schibi has 110 tackles for the Parsons defense.

However, they are facing a Sabetha defense that has allowed eight or fewer points in eight games this season and pitched four shutouts. After thumping Jeff West 32-7 in week nine, Sabetha responded last week at home trailing 8-0 against Perry Lecompton after one quarter and went on to win the game 26-8 as Braedon Cox kicked a pair of 38-yard field goals and had an 85 yards interception return for a touchdown in the only TD of the second half. Linebackers Gabe Garber and Cauy Rockey have racked up the tackles for Sabetha with great play all over the field, while the offense has also been balanced with more than 300 yards rushing per game. Joe Gruber has 957 yards on the ground while Garber has added 856 while also throwing for 803 yards this season. Ryan

Stapleton has 13 receptions for 281 yards to pace the receivers.

Game time is 6:00 PM at Marvel Park in Parsons on Friday night with the winner to face a Bulldog team next week, getting the winner of Galena at Marysville.

Marysville beat Galena 31-21 in 2009, the only year Galena has ever reached the state semifinals. Marysville is the defending state runner up and last week pulled off the big upset with a 34-16 victory at Hayden. Atreyau Hornbeak has turned on his offense in the post season with 299 yards last week and three scores against the Wildcats after posting 165 yards the week before in a win against Santa Fe Trail. He has 990 yards rushing now for the year while junior quarterback Brandon Schroedl has thrown for about 1,600 yards and 17 scores. Garron Champoux leads the Marysville defense with 127 tackles. Marysville has won six straight with their only losses this year to Sabetha (36-12) and Chapman in week one.

Galena is another one of the six unbeaten teams still alive in Class 3A and has outscored their opponents by an average score of 45-7. The Bulldogs’ 67 points allowed is tied for second in Class 3A behind only Andale’s 55. Last week, Galena defeated CNC rival Frontenac for a second time this season 27-7 which was the second closest game of the year, after topping Caney Valley by 18 points.

This game will kickoff at 5:00 PM on Friday in Marysville.
