Troy Girls, Wetmore Boys Advance to 1A Regional Semifinals

The Class 1A high school basketball playoffs got underway Monday night with opening round regional games and the Troy girls along with the Wetmore boys each advanced with wins in Wetmore.

GIRLS

The only upset of the day came from the Troy girls Monday night as the Lady Trojans picked up just their third win of the season by upsetting 10-win Wetmore 35-29.

Troy couldn’t have started any better jumping out to a 10-1 lead after the first quarter with juniors Macy Norris and Sidney Fleek each notching five points in the quarter.

Both teams struggled offensively between the second and third quarters with Troy taking an 18-7 lead after three quarters, but Wetmore had one final run to start the fourth.

Sophomore Alyssa Bloom knocked down two 3-pointers to start the fourth pulling the Cardinals within five points, but Troy went 11-of-16 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter to ice the game away.

The Trojan defense shine throughout holding Wetmore to just seven points through the first three quarters, while holding Wetmore freshman Kenzie Strathman to just nine points in the game after she had 23 points and 21 rebounds in the Cardinals win over Troy two weeks ago.

Troy (3-15) advances to take on Doniphan West in the second round Thursday at 6:00 pm, while Wetmore ends their season with a record of 10-11.

Troy: Macy Norris – 9, Abby Parks – 7, Holly Williams – 7, Sidney Fleek – 5, Reagan Hill – 4,  Avery Euler – 2, Alyssa Schmille – 1.

Wetmore: Kenzie Strathman – 9, Alyssa Bloom – 9, Reagan Osterhaus – 6, Ashley Flowers – 5, Campbell Brown – 1.

BOYS

From start to finish the Wetmore boys’ basketball team dominated Troy Monday night to advance in the Class 1A Onaga regional with a 68-52 victory.

The Cardinals started fast and never looked back, as senior Joel Hutfles exploded for 16 points in the first quarter giving Wetmore an 18-10 lead after one quarter.

Hutfles scored eight more points in the second quarter to push the Cardinals lead to 17 points at the half as he finished with 24 first half points.

The Cardinals pushed their lead to 18 going into the fourth quarter and held on despite going just 10-of-22 from the line in the fourth quarter.

Wetmore forced 18 turnovers in the win with Hutfles leading the way with 35 points, while Kael McQueen added 15 points to go along with freshman Eric Bloom’s 12.

The Cardinals (8-12) now advance to take on the top-seed Valley Falls Friday night, while Troy ends the season with a record of 6-13.

Wetmore: Joel Hutfles – 35, Kael McQueen – 15, Eric Bloom – 12, Braden Henry – 4, Storm Hackler – 2.

Troy: Reid Jasper – 19, Kipp Jasper – 14, Bray Davies – 12, Jacob Mott – 7.
