It was an all-Twin Valley League girl’s sub-state championship game at Marysville High School on Saturday night between the Frankfort and Centralia girls while the boy’s championship game featured the Frankfort boys as well.

Both games proved to be thrillers with the Panther girls and Wildcat boys each punching their tickets to the 1A State Tournament in Dodge City.

Girls Sub-State Final: Centralia 69, Frankfort 66

Despite trailing by seven points in the fourth quarter the Centralia girls rallied late scoring 20 points in the fourth quarter to move on to the Class 1A State Tournament with a 69-66 win over the Frankfort Wildcats.

Both teams started on fire offensively combining for seven 3-pointers in the first quarter with Frankfort holding a 23-21 lead after one as Kacia Shirley and Aubrie Rose each knocked down two in the frame.

The Panthers responded and took a 37-35 lead going into halftime behind five second quarter points from Morgan Kramer and four more from Avery Deters.

In the third though the Wildcats appeared to take complete control, as Frankfort outscored Centralia 20-12 in the quarter behind eight points from Kennen Brandt to take a 55-49 lead going into the fourth.

The Wildcats then pushed their lead to seven early in the fourth, but Centralia responded and won the fourth 20-11 to earn the dramatic victory behind eight points in the final frame from Kennedy Becker while as a team the Panthers were 11-of-14 from the free throw line in the quarter.

Centralia finished with three players in double-figures in the win led by Kennedy Becker who scored 16 points while Olivia Kuckleman and Avery Deters each added 14.

Frankfort was led in the loss by Aubrie Rose who finished with 19 points while Kennen Brandt added 15 as the Cats end their season with a record of 15-10.

Centralia now heads to the state tournament in Dodge City with a record of 18-8 and as the 7-seed will take on 2-seed Cunningham (25-0) with tip off scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday with live coverage on 92.1 KMZA.

Boys Sub-State Final: Frankfort 62, Beloit-St. John/Tipton 59

Just like the girl’s game the boys was equally as thrilling with Frankfort getting up big early but having to hold on late to take down the Blujays 62-59 to move on to the state tournament.

The Wildcats wasted no time jumping on top of the Blujays racing out to a 17-14 lead after one and a 36-27 lead at halftime behind 13 first half points from Gavin Cornelison and 10 more from Garrett Dalinghaus.

Beloit-St. John didn’t go down quietly though as the Blujays outscored Frankfort 18-10 in the third quarter to pull within one going into the fourth quarter at 46-45.

In the fourth the Wildcats went to the line 20 times and knocked down 13-of-20 free throws while outscoring the Blujays 16-14 in the fourth to claim the sub-state title.

The Cats were 20-of-31 from the stripe in the game knocking down six 3-pointers led by Dalinghaus who finished with 19 points while Gavin Cornelison added 17.
