Jeff West Sweeps Hiawatha in Hawks Season Opener

After just three days of being able to practice, Hiawatha played their first basketball games of the season on Friday night. However, it was Jeff West using a pair of dominant third quarters to come away with a sweep at the Roundhouse in their third contests of the year. 

GIRLS = Jeff West 41, Hiawatha 30

Despite seven early turnovers, HIawatha led 7-2 before a 7-0 run by Jeff West led to a 9-9 tie at the end of one quarter. Jeff West won the second quarter 10-4 then put the game away with a 14-7 third period to improve to 3-0 on the season. Mallory Young had her best night with 15 points while Kristin Biltoff added 11 and Mellany Roenne chipped in 8. The Tigers also made 10 of 13 free throws as a team.  

Hiawatha was plagued by 23 total turnovers and struggled making just one three-pointer. Sarah Madsen led the Hawks with 14 points while Clara Lindstrom had 8, but only two other players scored.

Jeff West built a 15-8 lead before Hiawatha pulled within 15-14 at the end of the first quarter and missed two easy buckets for a chance to take the lead. Hiawatha did grab their only lead of the game 26-25 in the second stanza before a tie score at halftime. This game was decided with an 11-0 run by Jeff West to start the second half with Carson Brading fueling the fire with eight of those points to take a 38-27 lead and never look back. The Tigers made 6 of their 10 total three-point baskets in the second half while outscoring Hiawatha 38-19 to improve to 2-1 on the season in their first non-overtime affair. 

Josh Broxterman scored a game high 26 points for Jeff West while Brading added 19 and Luke Dickey chipped in 8 as that trio combined for all 10 Tiger treys. Hiawatha ended up with 18 turnovers and after going 13-20 from the foul-line in the first half made just 2-5 in the final two frames. Carson Gilbert led Hiawatha with 11 points while Alex Rockey added 11 and Austin Coffelt scored 9.
