Jeff West Sweeps Hiawatha

It was a Friday night sweet in Meriden as Jeff West completed a season sweep of Hiawatha in Big 7 League action. 

GIRLS = Jeff West 52, Hiawatha 36

The Jeff West girls made a basket to start the second quarter and took a 21-10 lead. Yet, the didn't score the rest of the half as seven straight points by Sarah Madsen of Hiawatha pulled the Redhawks within 21-17 at intermission. The Tigers got back on track in the second half and outscored Hiawatha 31-19 in the final two quarters to improve to 10-5 on the season. 

Jeff West was extremely balanced with Mellany Roenne netting 10 points and Mallory Young, Kristin Biltoff and Ella Dickey all adding 9. Dickey, a freshman, got the start and hit three of the seven triples for the Tigers while Brooklyn Michaelis adding two more. 

Hiawatha got 13 points from Madsen while Clara Lindstrom added 8 and Darcy Lierz scored 6. The Redhawks dropped to 7-6 on the season and never got any than 24-21 early in the third quarter. 

BOYS = Jef West 55, Hiawatha 23

Following a tough overtime loss on a buzzer-beater against Holton earlier in the week which was the fifth loss by four of less points for the Tigers this year, Jeff West jumped to a 15-3 and never loked back. Leading 15-7 after one quarter, Jeff West scored 16 straight points to start the second quarter and led 33-10 at halftime in route to a fourth quarter running clock. 

Josh Broxterman scored 8 of his 20 points in the first period including a couple treys while Garet Athon added 10 points as the Tigers won for the first time since December and improved to 4-7 on the season. JW had also not played for two weeks in January prior to resuming action this week. 

Alex Rockey had 11 points to led Hiawatha who is now 3-10 overall and wil play four games next week in five days. The Redhawks played without three of their top six players (due to injury) who combine to average 20 points and 15 rebounds per night.
