The postseason got underway for area Class 1A boys basketball teams Friday night and in the 1A-DII Centralia sub-state the host Panthers held on late to take down a gritty Doniphan West team 60-48 and advance to next week’s semifinals.

It was all Panthers early on as Centralia jumped out to a 16-2 lead after the first quarter behind 12 first-quarter points from junior Raef Osterhaus and four more from junior Presley Bowers.

Doniphan West played much better in the second quarter, but Centralia still outscored the Mustangs 11-9 in the frame to balloon their lead to 16 points going into halftime.

Out of the break Centralia pushed their lead to as many as 20, but Doniphan West was not going to go down without a fight as the Mustangs went on a 12-0 run behind 10 third quarter points from junior Trent Spiker and five more from junior Kole Franken to trim the deficit down to four.

Centralia was able to push the lead back to eight going into the fourth quarter, but Doniphan West continued to battle and cut the deficit down to just two points with five minutes to go.

The Mustangs then turned the basketball over on three consecutive possessions and Centralia took advantage to put the game away as Bowers scored nine points in the fourth while Osterhaus added five more to seal the deal and hold off the valiant effort.

Doniphan West showed true grit throughout with just six guys total available but just simply ran out of gas in the end.

In the win Centralia (10-9) was led in scoring by Osterhaus who had a game-high 25 points including 16 in the first half while Bowers added 17 including those nine in the fourth.

Doniphan West in the loss had Lafe Blevins score 19 points along with 17 from Trent Spiker as the Mustangs wrap up the season with a record of 8-12.

Next up for Centralia is the semifinals next week on Friday as they will take on top-seeded Clifton-Clyde at 8 p.m. in Centralia with live coverage on 92.1 KMZA.
