GIRLS = Marysville 48, Sabetha 43

Despite four new starters and a lot of question mark entering this season, it couldn't have been a better start for Sabetha who jumped to a 13-2 lead and was ahead 17-5 after one quarter on the road. Marysville however would turn the tide in the second period and outscore the Jays 19-7 including a 13 points outburst from Eva Peschel and the score was tied at 24 at halftime.

Sabetha regained a 34-33 lead with a putback to end the third frame but the Lady Dawgs hit 6 of 8 free throws down the stretch and forced several turnovers to pull away for the five-point win. Emily Krebs banked in a trey with 37 seconds left to pull the Jays within 45-43, but they never got closer and ended the game with 20 turnovers.

Penn Bachelor scored 7 of her 11 points in the first quarter while Jadyn Dorn addded 9 points and Krebs had 6. Mikenna Haverkamp and Jessica Gruber both chipped in five points for Sabetha.

Peschel finished with 13 points while Madison Ronnebaum had 12 for Marysville who evened their record at 1-1 after falling at Hiawatha the night before.

BOYS = Sabetha 60, Marysville 50

Coming off a first losing season in a decade, the Sabetha boys showed that despite being young, they will be a force to be reckoned with after an impressive road win at Marysville. It was the Bulldogs second loss in as many nights to start the season after losing at Hiawatha on a buzzer-beater the night before. The Bluejays had four players score between 9 and 17 points and made 8 of 9 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away and seal the deal. The final 10-point margin was the biggest of the night as the game featured several lead changes and ties.

After early ties at 6, 8, and 10 points, Marysville grabbed a 16-10 advantage, only to see the Bluejays get a trey from Marcus Bauman and another from Matthew Garber to end the first quarter tied at 16. After a back and forth second stanza, Sabetha got a trey from Davis Rokey to beat the halftime buzzer and lead 30-29. The sophomore duo of Bauman and Christian McAfee got hot in the third quarter combining for 14 points as the Jays took a big lead of 48-41 and led by three entering the fourth quarter.

Garber and Bauman each scored 17 points while Rokey had 12 of his 14 in the first half and McAfee added 9 points while playing very limited minutes with foul trouble. Sabetha made six of their seven treys in the first half and won it with free throws late despite five of their 13 turnovers coming in the final period. Sabetha also had a nice rebounding advantage against the much taller Marysville squad that starts five players all over 6'1,

The Bulldogs got 19 points from their lone senior Sam Jesperson including three triples in the quarter when he put Marysville ahead 41-40, before the Bluejays 8-0 run.  Jack Lauer added 14 points for the Bulldogs but nobody else scored more than five.

Sabetha will host Wamego on Tuesday while Marysville stays home against Valley Heights in more non league matchups.
