TVL Basketball Tournament Girls Semifinals Recap

2013 Twin Valley League Tournament continued last night with the semifinals of the girls bracket.

Girls (Semifinals):

Washington County 67-59 over Valley Heights

Unbeaten on the season the Washington County Lady Tigers looked to continue to remain unbeaten and win the TVL tournament for third straight year, in which they would be the first team to do so in league history. In order for the Tigers to do that they had to dispatch a young and up and coming Valley Heights Lady Mustangs squad in the semifinals.

Washington County staved off all the runs the Mustangs had and punched their ticket to the championship game behind a 67-59 win. Tigers established a 29-19 lead at the half and continued on after that in the contest behind seven three-pointers and four players in double figures.

Heidi Stegman paced the way for the Tigers as she connected on four three-pointers on her way to 22 points on the night. Erin Alexander chipped in 16 points on the with Faithe Cecrle and Taylor Powell each adding 10 points for the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Mustangs were lead by a stellar performance from freshman, Brandi Roepke who poured in a 30 point performance in the loss, while Sidney Blackburn added 12 points.

With the win Washington County set themselves up for a third straight year with a spot in the TVL tournament championship and improved to 11-0 on the season. Valley Heights with the loss falls to 7-3 on the season and will play for third place.

Baileyville-B&B 56-47 over Frankfort 

In a battle of the two and three seeded teams the Frankfort Lady Wildcats took on the Lady Falcons of Baileyville-B&B and it was both teams trading blows in with two different quarters. After a 10-6 first quarter B&B lead but Frankfort responded with a 20-9 second quarter of action to take a 26-19 lead at the half. The Falcons came out taking over the game in the second half with their own 20-9 quarter coming in the third period and then outscored Frankfort by five more in the fourth for the 56-47 win.

Falcons spread the scoring around on the night working their way to the victory and a spot in the TVL tournament championship game. Junior, Laura Sudbeck lead the way with 17 points, while Katie Huerter added 15 points most of which came in the second half. Senior, Erica Sudbeck added in double figures also on the night with 10 points.

For Frankfort in the loss it was senior guard, Jessa Jones having her second best performance of the season in points scored as she tallied 23 points. Ashley Joseph added 10 points as they only other Wildcat to tallying double figures in the contest.

With the win Baileyville-B&B improved to 10-1 on the season and advances to the TVL tournament championship were they will get to face off with the only team that beat them this season in Washington County. For Frankfort they fall to 8-2 on the season and will contend for third place in the tournament.

 

Consolation Bracket (Semifinals):

Hanover 67-51 over Wetmore

Behind a quick start in the ballgame the Hanover Lady Wildcats paced themselves to a win in over the Lady Cardinals of Wetmore. Hanover got off to a fast start with a 24-15 first quarter and a 42-25 halftime lead after hitting seven three's in the first half and eight total in the ballgame. Hanover went on to win the game 67-51 over Wetmore.

The Lady Cardinals after getting behind early just couldn't dig themselves out the early deficit even with a 17-11 fourth quarter in their favor. Wetmore on the night was lead by Alayna Noe and Jordan Evans lead the way with 12 points each.

For Hanover the scoring was spread out but three players tallied double figures on the night as Claire Bruna lead the way with 20 points. Tiffany Bruna and Courtney Jueneman added 15 and 11 points, respectively.

With the win Hanover improved to .500 at 5-5 on the season now and while play for fifth place in the TVL tournament. For Wetmore, they suffered their fourth loss of the season and are now 6-4 on the season and will end the TVL tournament playing for seventh place.

 

Linn 48-43 over Centralia 

It was the closest ball game of the night and for the third time in the last four games the Lady Panthers of Centralia was on the short end of the stick by single digits in the contest, this time falling to the Lady Bulldogs of Linn who registered the 48-43 win.

The Lady Bulldogs established a 19-14 lead at the half and they would hold on to that margin after a 29-29 second half between the two teams. Sophomore, Nicole Ohlde continued to lead the way for Linn as she posted 19 points on the night.

For Centralia they were lead by sophomore, Liz Hasenkamp with 13 and junior, Kaitlyn Koch with 14 points in the loss.

Linn with the win improved to 5-7 on the season and set themselves up to play for fifth place in the TVL tournament. With the loss Centralia fell to 3-7 on the season and will end the tournament vying for seventh place.
