Centralia put together a perfect season in league play cruising to a perfect 12-0 record and an undefeated regular season. They fell just short of a Class 1A-DI state championship with a 37-35 loss to Pretty Prairie in Dodge City. Clifton-Clyde made the state tournament despite finishing 6-6 in league play. They, unfortunately, were upended by Hodgeman County 49-43 in the opening round. Valley Heights placed second in league play and made the Class 2A state tournament in Manhattan for their third straight time. The Mustangs fell to Berean Academy 46-43 in the first round. Hanover made the Class 1A-DII state tournament in Great Bend after going 12-3 in TVL play. They won their first round game against Lebo 54-47, but they lost in the semi-finals to Central Plains 49-44. The Wildcats won the consolation game 47-27 against Central Christian to claim third place. With a lot of talent among those teams coming back this year, this will likely be a very competitive season yet again.

AXTELL is hoping to turn things around after a 3-19 season. They will turn to new head coach Bradley Broxterman, who will hope to get the Eagles back to their winning ways. They have some experience mixed with some younger players, who will have to make a difference right away. There are definitely some winnable games on their schedule, but they will have to execute every night because the TVL will be tough this year.

Last season was a rollercoaster, according to BLUE VALLEY Rams ninth year head coach Matt Schreiber. They finished 9-13 overall and 3-10 in TVL play. The Rams are a testament to how challenging the league was last year going 6-3 in non-league games. During the offseason, they had time to heal injuries they accrued last season and will hope to build off last year’s up-and-down season.

After a disappointing finish in the state title game, CENTRALIA begins of new era with first year head coach Dusty Thompson taking over. He will look to lead the Panthers back to the promised land after a 25-1 season and a perfect 12-0 record in TVL play. Centralia loses some pieces but return some good experience and get some younger players with a lot of potential.

The winning ways of CLIFTON-CLYDE continued last year as they achieved their seventh consecutive winning season with a 15-9 overall record. The Eagles clinched a spot in the state tournament but lost in the opening round. Head coach Kieran Wurtz mentioned that this is the most athletic team they have had, so the ceiling for this team is very high. If Clifton-Clyde can get some valuable production from their bench, they could return to state again this year if things fall their way.

FRANKFORT brings back a lot of their best pieces from last year’s team after a 15-8 season with a 6-6 league record. Seventh year head coach Brian Ebert has a chance for a really good year with the potential to get some upsets against some of the teams in the top of the league. The Wildcats are fairly guard-heavy and are fairly young but have the experience to find themselves in the thick of the TVL race in late-February.

DONIPHAN WEST’S season ended suddenly in the semifinal round of the sub-state tournament last year after an impressive 16-6 season. Head coach Perry Smith’s team has a ton of talent and athleticism with players that placed third at the state volleyball tournament competing in basketball as well. They will use their quickness to get pressure on opponents in the backcourt and in the frontcourt. Look for them to be in the mix for the TVL title this year.

The HANOVER Wildcats got to the semi-finals at the state tournament before being upended by Central Plains. Head coach Chris Beikmann’s team placed third after beating Central Christian in the consolation game. Hanover finished 20-5 overall with a modest 12-3 league record. On paper, they are the team to beat, but they will still have a lot to prove this year.
It was a pretty solid 2021-22 season for LINN with a 13-9 overall record and a 6-6 TVL record. The Bulldogs made their first sub-state finals appearance in six years and will look to get back to that spot this year. Despite losing some key seniors, they still have pieces that can keep this Linn team playing at a high level. They will have to win some tough games, however, in one of the best leagues in the state.

Last year was a tough one for three-year head coach Craig Boswell’s ONAGA Buffaloes as they were only able to go 3-10 in league play with an overall record of 5-15. Things will be much better this year with a squad that returns all five starters and gained some valuable experience. They will hope to learn from their mistakes and be more competitive this season.

TROY made some major improvements from two years ago, when they got just five regular season wins, to last year with six league wins. The Trojans started the year slow struggling in non-league play, but they played well in the games that mattered to go 6-6 in TVL competition. Sadly, head coach Derek Jasper loses four starters so they will try to start over again from scratch.

The VALLEY HEIGHTS Mustangs were able to get to the state tournament last year for the third consecutive season, but they fell in the opening round to Berean Academy by three points. A good amount of their players on this year’s team also went to state for volleyball as well this past fall. Seventh-year head coach Jordan Broxterman will hope to continue their successes with very talented athletes.

WASHINGTON COUNTY found themselves in the middle of the pack last season with a 6-6 league record finishing 12-10 overall. Head coach Scott Romeiser enters his 13th year as head coach and will try to break through to the top-half of the league this year and will try to do so with a solid number of players returning.

WETMORE was able to get a sub-state victory over Axtell last year, but there were not a ton of positives to take away from last year after a 5-17 season. They return three starters, but the Cardinals lose their best player to graduation last season so this year will have its ups and downs. With first-year head coach Kylah Foote leading the team, though, this could be a completely different team. It will be a very important season for Wetmore to try to turn this program back around.
