Axtell picked up the sweep against Wetmore Tuesday evening with the girls’ team winning 56-22 and the boys’ team winning 68-35.

The Axtell’s girls’ defense was suffocating and didn’t allow hardly any open shots to the Cardinals. They held Wetmore to five points in each of the first three quarters while scoring effectively all the while.

Senior Laney Porting had a solid six-point first quarter and finished with ten at the half. Junior Kaylee Sandmann finished with 12 points in the first half to go up 34-10 into the break.

The second half was all about taking care of business and the Eagles did just that. Senior Taylor Broxterman had seven points in the third quarter helping Axtell pull away from Wetmore and not allowing them to get into a rhythm in the second half. She finished with 13 points.

Wetmore’s junior Rylie Nichols led the Cardinals in scoring with 14 points. Sophomore scored seven points with all of them coming in the fourth quarter.

Sandmann led the team with 18 points and is the “Player to Bank On” brought to you by Farmers State Bank.

The Eagles pick up their second win in a row to improve to 2-1. As for Wetmore, they fall to 0-4 on the young season.

In the boys’ game, Axtell’s offense burst onto the scene in the first quarter with sophomore Eli Broxterman nailing three three-pointers. He kept it up in the second quarter with three more perimeter makes and 11 more points for a 20-point first half. Senior Isaac Detweiler was also red-hot from deep with 13 first half points. He would finish with 17. The Eagles scored 22 points in each of the first two quarters to go up 44-22 at the half.

Axtell was able to coast through the second half to a blowout victory with eight total scorers contributing for the victors.

Wetmore senior Kyler Wommack led the Cardinals in scoring with 12 points.

Broxterman led all scorers with 25 points and is the “Player to Bank On” brought to you by Farmers State Bank.

The ninth-ranked Eagles improve to 3-0 on the year, and Wetmore falls to 1-2.
