Frankfort hosted Doniphan West Tuesday night as both teams resumed play after a lengthy Christmas break. The Frankfort girls were victorious winning 49-43, and the Doniphan West boys got their first win of the regular season winning 34-31 in overtime.

In the girls’ game, Frankfort came into the game ranked eighth in the KBCA poll, and they played like it. They dominated right out of the gate outscoring the Mustangs 15-2 in the opening quarter thanks to junior guard Tana Stowell, who made three three-pointers. She would finish the game with nine points.

In the second quarter, Doniphan West’s offense woke up and scored 17 points to get within six points at halftime.

Frankfort junior guard Emma Hardwick would make a pair of threes to keep D-West at arm’s length in the third quarter, and they held off the Mustangs in the fourth quarter to stay perfect in league play.

Doniphan West sophomore guard Brennah Edie led in scoring with 14 points. She kept them in the game with 11 of those points coming in the fourth quarter. Senior forward Avery Weathersbee also contributed 12 points in the loss.

In the boys’ game, both teams experienced a sluggish start. They each only made one field goal apiece with the score tied 4-4 after the first eight minutes.

Frankfort got a surge of offense from sophomore guard Trent Hardin and sophomore forward Lane Loiseau to take a seven-point lead with a 6-0 Wildcat run. Doniphan West was able to respond with points of their own to keep the deficit at one possession going into the fourth quarter.

Most of the scoring came at the beginning of the quarter with both offenses going back and forth at the end of regulation with turnovers and missed shots. The game would need extra time with the game deadlocked 28-28 after 32 minutes of action.

In the extra four minutes, Doniphan West just needed one field goal from Penny and some free throws to give them their first win in league play and in the regular season.
