Hiawatha and Holton Split Friday Night Doubleheader

The Hiawatha girls and Holton boys basketball teams picked up wins on Friday night in a Big 7 league double dip. 

Girls: Hiawatha 49, Holton 33

The Redhawks got out to an early lead and never looked back on their way to another win on Friday night at Holton. 

Hiawatha led 19-6 after one quarter and 31-17 at halftime. They were led by Darcy Lierz with 20 points and seven rebounds while Abby Elffner added 12 points and made four three's. Hiawatha hit seven three's in the game and forced 21 Holton turnovers. 

The Wildcats were down multiple key pieces and were playing this game shorthanded. Elizabeth Schuster led the way for the Wildcats finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds while Natalie Willcott added 10 points. 

Hiawatha has won seven of their last eight games and improve to 10-7 overall and 5-6 in Big 7 play while Holton drops to 7-10 overall and 4-7 in Big 7 play. 

Boys: Hiawatha 42, Holton 57

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and had to hold off a Redhawks flurry in the second half to come away with the win at home. 

Holton led 19-8 after one quarter and 28-19 at halftime. Hiawatha kept pace plus some extra in the third quarter and got it to within five going into the final frame. 

Holton turned it up and controlled the pace in the fourth quarter and outscored Hiawatha 16-6 in the final eight minutes. 

Holton got 14 points from Matthew Lierz, 12 from Tyson Snyder and 11 from Ashton Schrick. Cameron Boswell led Hiawatha by hitting four three's and finishing with 16 points. 

The win for Holton moves them to 11-6 overall and 9-2 in Big 7 play while the loss for Hiawatha dropped them to 3-14 overall and 1-10 in Big 7 play. 

Up next for both on Tuesday, Holton travels to Riverside while Hiawatha returns home to host Jefferson West.
