(KLZA)-- For the second consecutive season the Falls City Sacred Heart Irish girls are the Nebraska Class D2 State Champions.

Saturday night the top ranked Irish survived a fourth quarter push by #4 ranked Wynot to win the title 33-32. The game marked the 10th meeting between the two schools in the state tournament in the past 12 years, the fourth time with the title on the line. The Irish are 3-1 in those title games.

After scoring the first 10 points of the game and holding the Blue Devils scoreless in the first period Sacred Heart led 17 – 14 at halftime, went up by 8 after three quarters and then held off a late push by Wynot to win the championship.

Sacred Heart was led by All-Tournament honoree's Jessica Werterberger with 11 points and Makinley Scholl who was injured most of the season who came off the bench to provide 10 points and solid defense for the Irish.

Sacred Heart was able to hole on in the fourth period despite the loss of senior guard Delanie Witt suffering a severe knee injury midway through the quarter.

All four Irish points in the final period came at the free-throw line from Werternberger and Sophomore Jentry Lechtenberg. Kinslee Heimes led Wynot with 11 points including a trio of 3-point buckets.

The Irish finish the season 26-3. Wynot completes the season 18-10.

Sacred Heart beat Leyton in round 1, 64-30 and snuck by fifth ranked Humphrey St. Francis in the Friday night semi final 33-29 in overtime.

In the past 17 season under Coach Luke Santo, the Lady Irish have won five championships, placed second two times and brought home five third place trophies.
