Axtell’s title run comes to a close after a 68-52 loss to Lebo in the semifinal round of the Class 1A-D2 state tournament in Great Bend.

Lebo shot lights out from everywhere shooting 56.8% for the entire game and 70% in the first half.

The Wolves outscored the Eagles 23-7 in the second quarter and the Eagles were unable to get any closer than 13 points.

Lebo senior guard Landon Grimmett scored 19 points in the first half going 7-for-9 in total field goals and 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. He would finish with 32 points going 9-for-13 for the entire ballgame including going 9-for-11 from the free throw line with all of those attempts coming in the fourth quarter. Axtell trailed 42-19 at the half and never really had a chance to get back in the game.

The Eagles were unable to make their three-pointers as they shot just 16.7% from deep. Axtell shot just 37.7% from the floor collectively.

However, they did get a solid game out of senior guard Isaac Detweiler, who finished with 13 points. He shot 5-for-10 and was a rebound shy of a double-double.

Sophomore forward Brandon Schmelzle scored 12 points as well.

The Eagles will hope to bring some hardware home with a shot at the third-place game Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. against 5-seed South Central.
