Nemaha Central Sweeps Home Track Meet

The Nemaha Central track and field teams hosted their April Invitational on Tuesday afternoon. The Thunder girls and boys both finished in first place with the Axtell girls and boys following with second place finishes. 

Girls: Nemaha Central finished with 189.5 points to run away from the field with a handful of first place finishes. 

Hailey Nordhus won the 400 meters while also finishing in second place in the 800 meters. Cali Honeyman had a strong afternoon as she had first place marks in the 100 meter hurdles and long jump. 

Cami Dalinghaus won both the shot put and discus events while Jade Macke won the javelin. The Thunder also swept the relay events winning the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800. 

The Axtell Eagles posted a second place with 92.5 points. Claire Buessing won the 3200 meter run while Kylie Smith won both the 300 meter hurdles and triple jump. 

Smith's mark of 36-6.75 in the triple jump broke the Axtell school record and is the fifth best jump among all classifications this season. 

Valley Heights and Centralia tied for fourth place with 64 points. Brooke Porter led the Mustangs winning the 200 meter dash and finishing second in both the 100 meter dash and long jump. 

The Panthers had two top showings with Tatum Kramer winning the 100 meter dash and Reagan Becker winning the high jump. 

Rounding out the team scores were Onaga (36), Troy (11), and Wetmore (2). 

Boys: The Thunder and Eagles were by far and away the top two teams at this event with the Thunder just beating out Axtell for first place 165-160. 

Strong showing across the board for NC with John Langill winning both the 800 and 1600 meter runs, Connor Deters winning both the shot put and discus, Joshua Gonzalez winning the javelin, and Caleb Strathman winning the high jump. 

Brandon Schmelzle and Landon Schmitz led Axtell as they both won three events. Schmelzle won the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and long jump. 

Schmelzle's time of 10.92 in the 100 broke the Axtell school record and is tied for the 12th fastest time among all classes in the state. 

Schmitz won the 110 meter hurdles, 300 meter hurdles, and triple jump. The Eagles also won both the 4x400 and 4x800 meter relays. 

Centralia finished in fourth place with 52 points and Valley Heights finished in fifth place with 49 points. The Mustangs got a first place finish from Jayden Dewalt in the pole vault. 

Rounding out the team scores were Wetmore (17), Troy (11), and Onaga (2).
