TVL Tournament Day 5 Recap; Centralia Girls, Axtell Boys Victorious in Title Games

BOYS 3RD PLACE: CLIFTON-CLYDE 45, CENTRALIA 42

Duke Timmel scored Centralia’s first eight points in the first quarter and finished with ten. For Clifton-Clyde, Coy Steinbrock nailed a pair of threes and Jack Skocny added five more. The Panthers would have a 16-11 lead after the first eight minutes.

Both offenses would cool down in the second quarter as the Panthers were only able to get four points. Skocny kept it going, though, with five more points to give him ten at the break. The game was tied 20-20 going into halftime.

Clifton-Clyde finished the third quarter on a 13-3 run after Centralia had a momentary two-point lead. Trent Long scored five points in the period to give the Eagles a 35-27 lead into the fourth quarter.

Centralia got themselves back in the game midway through the fourth quarter after Clifton-Clyde got up by as many as ten. It was a 10-1 Centralia run that cut their deficit to 38-37 with two minutes left in the game. Quentin Alderfer drained a three-pointer off the backboard with 8.7 seconds left to cut their deficit back to three, and they forced a turnover to have a chance for the win, but Alderfer couldn’t make the shot as the time expired.

Skocny led the Eagles in scoring with 16 points making him our Player of the Game brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Timmel finished with 20 points for the Panthers.

GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP: CENTRALIA 58, CLIFTON-CLYDE 56

The Wurtz sisters dominated the first quarter with Sevy getting nine and Shea getting the other five to give Clifton-Clyde a 14-7 lead.

There wasn’t much scoring in the opening four minutes of the second quarter as both teams combined for four field goal makes. Free throws for Clifton-Clyde helped them extend their lead to 28-14, but Centralia went on an 8-0 in the 90 seconds of the half to get the score to 28-22 at halftime.

Centralia would continue their run and get their first lead halfway through the third quarter. However, it would be a 9-0 run for the Eagles at the end of the period, including a buzzer-beating bank shot three-pointer to give them a 48-42 lead.

After Clifton-Clyde held a 52-47 lead two minutes into the fourth quarter. That’s when the Panthers took their game to a whole different level as they went on an 11-2 run to go up 58-54 inside one minute left. Clifton-Clyde would get a layup, and they had a few chances to tie it in the final seconds, but the Eagles were unable to get a shot to fall and Centralia would win the championship after having to come back twice in the second half.

Oen Deters led the team in scoring with 17 points, including going 7-for-10 from the free throw line and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. She is our Player of the Game brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Tava Gibbs added 12 points with three and-ones and went 4-for-5 on her free throws. For Clifton-Clyde, Sevy Wurtz led all scorers with 19 points. Shea Wurtz scored 12 before fouling out with 1:24 remaining in the game.

 

 

BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP: AXTELL 48, HANOVER 34

In the first quarter, Axtell’s offense wasted no time getting into a rhythm. They scored 15 points in the opening frame including six points from Eli Broxterman. As for Hanover, they had eight points with Braylon Meyn and Garrett Martin scoring four each.

Axtell’s defense was suffocating in the second quarter as they allowed just six points. As for their offense, Logan Sandmann came off the bench and scored a pair of two-point baskets. Axtell would lead at halftime 26-14.

The third quarter was more of an offensive struggle. Brandon Schmelzle scored the only four points in the frame for the Eagles, and Hanover only scored six.

Colin Shaughnessy made his first appearance since the quarterfinal round, and he made a pair of jumpers to help keep Axtell’s lead. Hanover was able to get the deficit trimmed to six with a few minutes left, by Wyatt Detweiler made a three-pointer and a breakaway layup to seal Axtell’s second consecutive TVL Tournament Championship.

Broxterman finished with 14 points, including six in the fourth quarter. He is your Player of the Game brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Detweiler’s five fourth-quarter points put him in double-digits as he finished his day with 11 points.
