Intro

The number four seed, Jackson Heights, comes into the night looking to upset the number two seed in Sacred Heart. Both teams stepping into today have a familiar history with each-other as they faced off in the 2016 2A State Championship game with Jackson Heights winning 64-55 to claim their third state title in school history. However this time around Sacred Heart has built a Senior heavy team with six seniors, nearly all above six-foot tall, to take on the Mighty Cobras in a Sub-State Semi-Final showdown.

Jackson Heights Vs Sacred Heart (31-57)

The game started with the Cobras taking the early tip-off, but they couldn’t capitalize on the open shots, or even their first seven of the game. The Cobra boys in the blink of an eye ended the first quarter with only three points down by six 3-9. Drake Mellies had the only points for the snakes to end the first. The second quarter finished in the worst way possible for the Cobras, down 23-12 with your six-foot-five Senior, Sean Hayden, stepping out of the game with an ankle injury. Shots in the first half were also not falling for the Jackson Heights Cobra Boys, as I mention earlier their first seven not going in. The second half was a slaughter with a running clock enforced in the fourth quarter. The Cobras were out scored 34-19 in the second half and outscored in the third quarter alone 20-5. The unfortunate truth for the Cobras was that Mellies was the only scorer for both the first and third quarter. Mellies also added five points in the fourth quarter to end the game with thirteen points alone. The game ended 57-31 in a heartbreak for the Cobras season ending in the Semi-finals of substate.

Season Wrap-Up and a Look Into Next Season

The Jackson Heights Cobra Boys finish the year 10-12 in the overall and left the stamp on the NEKL 9-7 finished 5th in the league. Jackson Heights throughout the year had their ups and downs, even at one point briefly lead the entire league. It’s going to be a tough send-off to the fresh team that came in this year in Sean Hayden, Weston Shultajans, Brayden McQueen (Ka-chow), and possibly even Jayden Gueye. Looking into the future the Cobra Boys will be returning three varsity starters in Sophmore and leading scorer Drake Mellies, Junior Jace Robinson, and Junior Kade Holiday. Drake Mellies finishes his Sophomore year with three-hundred-seven points, which is one-hundred-fifty more points than his freshman year. Mellies is now at a career scoring of four-hundred-sixty-four points entering his Junior year. The snakes will also look to bring up Sophmore Jace Doyle and for some six-foot and above height: Freshman Sir Peak, Sophomore Austin Zeller, and Freshman Eli Kirk.
