Centralia Advances to Sub-State Championship, Doniphan West Falls Short

Burlingame 55, Doniphan West 32

The Burlingame Bearcats girls basketball team was able to upend the reigning Class 1A-D1 state champion Doniphan West Mustangs by a final score of 55-32.

Burlingame scored the first seven points of the ballgame, and Doniphan West didn’t get their first points until there was 3:54 remaining. Those points, however, would be the start of a 6-0 run. The quarter would end with the Bearcats hanging on to a 10-6 lead. Burlingame freshman Harper Seele scored seven of the team’s points.

Kaylin Noonan, the active-leading scorer in state of Kansas among all classifications, went scoreless in the first quarter for the Bearcats, but started to get into a rhythm in the second quarter. She helped them get up by as much as 11, but Doniphan West went on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to four points. When it looked like the Mustangs had things figured out, the Bearcats went on a 6-1 run at the end of the quarter to take a 27-18 lead at the break. Noonan scored 10 points in the quarter, and Seele added four points to get her total to 11 going into the locker room.

Noonan added another eight points in the third quarter, and Doniphan West had a tough time keeping up. The Bearcats outscored the Mustangs 13-8 in the quarter to give them a 40-26 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Burlingame continued to grow their lead, and Doniphan West was unable to keep up in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs were unable to make a three for the entirety of the ballgame, and had struggles getting shots to fall from inside the paint as well.

Noonan finished with 25 points, making her our Player of the Game brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Seele also finished with 15 points. For Doniphan West, Malaina Whetstine led the Mustangs with seven points.

Centralia 42, Troy 36

In a game filled with runs, high emotion, and terrific defense, it would be the Centralia Panthers girls basketball team that would advance to the sub-state championship game with a 42-36 win over Troy.

After Centralia scored the first five points of the game, Troy went on a 12-2 run to take a five-point lead. However, with the final seconds of the first quarter ticking off, Oen Deters buried a long three at the buzzer to get the Panthers within two points going into the second quarter.

Centralia got the lead back immediately and kept it for the entirety of the second quarter, with the exception of a 16-16 tie. Deters and Gracie Grable for Troy each had seven points at halftime.

The Panthers started the third quarter strong with a 6-2 run, but it would be Troy that would go on a late run. Harper Whetstine, after a rough first half, scored eight of the team’s 13 points in the quarter which would give Troy their first lead since the first minute of the second quarter. They would have a 31-28 lead going into the final frame.

Centralia would started the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run, much like they did in the second quarter. Troy went on a scoreless drought that last for the first 5:30 of the quarter. Deters would nail a three-pointer to give the Panthers a 39-36 lead with 1:10 left, and that shot would be the difference maker. In the fourth quarter, Centralia outscored Troy 14-5.

Deters led all scorers with 18 points, and with that combined with her game-winning shot, she is our Player of the Game brought to you by the Farmers State Bank. Troy was led by Whetstine who finished with 14 points, and Grable scored 13 points.

Centralia will play Burlingame in the sub-state championship game on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m., and it will be broadcast on Sunny 101.3 FM.
