Centralia Girls On to State, Boys on Wrong Side of Buzzer-Beater

It was a fast start for both teams as they each traded baskets. Centralia made three threes to take a 13-11 lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter was more of the same with Centralia holding an infinitesimal lead for the majority. Both teams had a couple of players in foul trouble, but there was only one substitution in the entire half combined. Reese Tanking led the Panthers with seven points going into the break.

Bishop Seabury forward Chase Honarvar picked up his third foul early in the third quarter, and Centralia made a priority to attack him with Duke Timmel scoring seven of the team’s 11 points. Honarvar picked up his fourth foul with 2:12 remaining in the third quarter, and Centralia was able to extend their lead to 33-27 by the end of the period.

In the fourth quarter, the Panthers attacked the paint mercilessly resulting in them continuing to grow their lead which eventually got to double-digits. However, Aidan Page for Bishop Seabury scored 10 points in the quarter to the Seahawks back with two points with less than 30 seconds left. The Seahawks ended up making five threes in the quarter for a total of 25 points. They would make a game-winning buzzer-beater from Jace Smith that sent Bishop Seabury to the state tournament.

Smith finished with 14 points with a couple of threes late in the fourth quarter which includes his buzzer-beater. He is your Player of the Game brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Honarvar finished with a game-high 19 points, and Page finished the game with 12 points after fouling out in the final 30 seconds.

Timmel led Centralia in scoring with 15 points, Quentin Alderfer scored 12 points and Paxton Bowers finished with 11 points.

The Panthers finish the 2023-24 season with an overall record of 16-6.

Centralia 65, Burlingame 35

The first quarter was high-scoring with Oen Deters starting hot for the Panthers. She scored 10 points in the first quarter with Josie Haverkamp coming off the bench and scoring seven more points. They would lead 19-12 going into the second quarter.

Deters and Haverkamp kept it up in the second quarter, as they were able to extend their lead and have a 32-20 advantage at halftime. Deters had 16 points at the break and Haverkamp had 11 points.

Centralia started the third quarter with an 8-1 run to quickly get the game out of reach. Deters continued her special performance with eight more points, giving her 24 points through three quarters. They would outscore Burlingame 13-5, and cruise to their third state tournament berth in the past five years.

Deters led all scorers with 26 points, and she is the Player of the Game brought to you by Farmers State Bank. Haverkamp added 18 points off the bench, and Tava Gibbs finished with eight points.

Kaylin Noonan finished with 20 points, and entered into the top 100 all-time scoring list, surpassing Frankfort alum Emilee Ebert.
