Holton Wins Shootout With Riley County

The Holton Wildcats scored on seven on their nine possession in their home opener and evened their record at 1-1 with an explosive 11-point win against Big East foe Riley County. The Cats never trailed in the game and finished with 564 yards of offense, including 66 runs for 537 rushing yards with three athletes surpassing more than 120 yards on the ground. 

Holton's only punt came on their first drive of the game, but the Wildcat defense forced a three-and-out before Korban Wilson opened the scoring with a 7-yard TD run followed by the first of three Alec Frazier two-point-conversions for an 8-0 lead. After Kadrick Woodard hit Trey Weber for a 47-yard touchdown pass to answer for Riley County, Frazier ripped off a dazzling 56-yard option keeper TD and the shootout was on. Rielyn Wurtz scored on a short run into the endzone and added the conversion to tie the score at 14, but Wilson hit a 25-yard field goal to give Holton the 17-14 halftime edge. 

Holton forced another three-and-out on defense to start the second half and then proceeded to score touchdown on all four second half drives. Their led by 11 on four different occasions but Riley County kept answering until the Wildcats got a key fourth down red zone stop with 4:23 remaining and a 39-28 advantage. Fullback Cael Frazier a few plays later broke a 45-yard touchdown run to take a 47-27 lead and seal the win. 

Cael Frazier finished with 19 carries for 122 yards while Andrew Shupe led the Holton wishbone with 176 yards on 17 carries including TD runs of 10 and 31 yards in the second half. QB Alec Frazier also scored twice and had 136 yards on just 12 totes while Wilson had 87 yards on 15 carries in the balanced attack. Holton averaged more than 8 yards per carry and gained 24 first downs while overcoming 10 penalties for 70 yards. Holton host Royal Valley in week three. 

Riley County had 22 first downs and was led by Kadrick Woodard who had 18 carries for 88 yards and went 16-26 passing for 274 yards. Trey Weber had 106 yards receiving on five catches including a touchdown as did Brendon Woodard with his 80 yards receiving. Wurtz finished with 85 rushing yards before the Falcons fell to 0-2 on the season. They will play at Chapman next week.
