The Hiawatha and Troy girls locked in on Friday night with their matchup coming down to the wire as the Redhawks were able to prevail 40-38.
The Redhawks (2-0) trailed 10-7 after the first quarter as both teams struggled to score in the first few minutes of the game.
Troy (1-2) let the slim lead get away from them in the second quarter as they Redhawks outscored the Trojans 14-9 to lead the game 21-19 at halftime.
Hiawatha would build their lead to 34-28 going into the fourth quarter and despite being outscored in the fourth quarter by Troy, the Redhawks were able to hold on for the win.
Troy’s Harper Whetstine led all scorers finishing with 21 points and nine rebounds while Hailey Groff finished with eight points.
The Redhawks were led by Michaela Williams who was the KNZA Player of the Game presented by Citizens State Bank & Trust in Hiawatha as she finished with 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Redhawks also got a good game from Kylie Nelson as she finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, and Kenzie Nelson added five points and nine rebounds.
