Back in May, the Axtell boys track and field team made a statement in Class 1A, capturing their third consecutive state championship with a dominant performance in Wichita. The Eagles left no doubt, piling up 90 points—more than double the 34 points of second-place Kiowa County—and showcasing a level of depth and talent few teams could match.
Star athletes led the way, with Landon Schmitz claiming gold in both the 110- and 300-meter hurdles and Brandon Schmelzle taking first in the long jump. Axtell was nearly unbeatable in the relays, sweeping championships in the 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 events. Other standout performances included Schmelzle earning silver in the 400-meter dash, Logan Sandmann taking second in the high jump, and Gavin Shaughnessy capturing bronze in the 3,200-meter run.
The Eagles’ commanding team effort and record-setting dominance made this third straight title an unforgettable chapter in Axtell track history, solidifying the 2025 championship as one of the top sports moments of the year.
