Last night, the Hanover Wildcats hosted the Onaga Buffaloes in a Twin Valley League Match-up a week before the TVL tournament hits our way. Both the Hanover boys and girls are #1 ranked in Class 1A DII and came away with two dominating defeats of Onaga in both match-ups.
Hanover over Onaga 60-36 (Girls)
The first two minutes were scoreless between Hanover and Onaga, but once Hanover got on the board, they stayed on the board. The Wildcats and five different scorers in just the opening quarter and seven by the half. The halftime score was 32-8, and Trinity Schlabach had led the first half scoring with 10 points for the Hanover Wildcats. By the half, Onaga suffered with about 15 turnovers while Hanover defensively had eight steals.
Impressively, both teams in the second half scored 28 points to get to the final score of 60-36, but the Hanover Wildcats continued to impress defensively as Onaga had over 25 turnovers to end the game with around 15 of those coming away as steals for the Wildcats. Onaga did find a spark with six threes in the second half, and Jadyn Haskin reached double-digit scoring for Onaga. Hanover had at one point a 35+ lead in the fourth, but the Buffaloes managed to stay tough til the end and draw the game a little closer to the 60-36 final scoreline.
Hanover over Onaga 80-37 (Boys)
The first quarter exchange was intense to begin between Hanover and Onaga, with four total lead changes in the first, including the final lead change of the quarter swinging to the Wildcats to go up 14-13. However, after this fourth lead change, it became the final one of the game as the Hanover Wildcats would start to separate the score by the half by leading 37-23, outscoring Onaga 23-10 in the second quarter. Onaga kept it competitive at the start of the quarter after going down 21-13 back-to-back Casen Huftles buckets made it 21-17, but it was after that point specifically that Hanover wouldn’t look back. At the Half, Braylon Meyn, Cooper Bruna, and Jack Bruna all had at least nine points for the Wildcats, and Casen Huftles and Koy Nider led Onaga with eight apiece in the first half.
Hanover outscored 43-13 in the second half, putting on an impressive performance from their entire team, including their bench. Nine total wildcats scored, including Braylon Meyn, who led the night in scoring with 19 total points, with Cooper Bruna right behind him with 15. Both Koy Nider and Casen Huftles reached double digits in the second half for Onaga, with Nider hitting 10 points to finish the game and Huftles ending the night with fifteen points.
Conclusion
The Hanover Wildcats are now 3-0 in the TVL on both the boys and girls side; however, the boys sought improvement to an 8-0 record whilst the girls improved to a 7-1 overall record. Onaga is now 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the league for both the boys' and girls' teams, and both teams will look to snap their six-game losing streak with Axtell next Tuesday.
