Michael Jensen delivered a night to remember Friday at Hiawatha High School, putting on a record-setting shooting performance to lead the Redhawks boys basketball team to a 70-55 home win over Jefferson West.
Jensen poured in a game-high 26 points, knocking down seven three-pointers in the process. The seven made shots from beyond the arc set a new single-game school record for Hiawatha, surpassing the previous mark of six that had stood since the 1995–96 season and was held by Bryan Rockey. Jensen’s hot hand provided a spark throughout the night and consistently kept Jefferson West at bay.
The record-setting effort fueled Hiawatha to its ninth consecutive victory as the Redhawks improved to 10-1 overall and 4-0 in Big East League play. Ranked No. 8 in Class 3A, Hiawatha once again showcased its offensive firepower and ability to close out games.
Ethan Morton delivered another strong performance, finishing with 18 points. Morton saved his best basketball for the second half, scoring 16 of his 18 points after halftime. He was especially effective in the fourth quarter, where he tallied nine points to help seal the win and prevent any late rally by the Tigers.
Hiawatha also received solid contributions across the lineup. Lane Kesler added 11 points and seven rebounds, providing a steady presence on both ends of the floor. Braylen Siebenmorgen came just shy of a double-double, finishing with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds as he controlled the glass and helped limit second-chance opportunities.
Jefferson West, now 7-4 overall and 5-3 in league play, had chances to make the game more competitive in the second half but was unable to string together enough stops or baskets to seriously threaten the Redhawks. The Tigers trailed by double digits for much of the night as Hiawatha maintained control.
Reese Hackett and Jason Payne led Jefferson West with 17 points apiece, while Brody Schwinn also reached double figures with 11 points. Despite those efforts, the Tigers were unable to slow Hiawatha’s balanced attack and historic shooting performance.
With Jensen’s record night and continued strong play from its supporting cast, Hiawatha continues to build momentum as it moves deeper into league play.
