Axtell (2-Seed) put on an impressive second quarter and even better second half to make an early comeback against Centralia and move on in the Twin Valley League tournament last night.
Centralia came out on fire in the first quarter jumping out 17-10. Centralia drained nearly every shot taken in the first quarter with Isaac Reinecke scoring seven points while both Quinten Alderfer and Aiden Talley scored four a piece. Axtell struggled to shoot in the first quarter, going 4 of 12 from the free throw line as well after missing their first six straight of the game, going on another stretch of missing five straight going into the second quarter. Despite the difficult shooting start and even star player Colin Shaughnessy having to take to the bench due to foul trouble with still half a quarter to go in the second with eight points, Axtell rallied from behind and took the lead going into the half 34-33. There was four lead changes in the last 65 seconds of the first half, and one of the biggest contributors on the half was Clayton Heinen with seven points from Axtell along with Landon Schmitz.
Axtell would run away with the game in the second half, outscoring Centralia 35-19 in the final two quarters. Colin Shaughnessy got hot coming out of the third quarter by nailing three threes in the third quarter and scoring 22 points in the second half. Shaughnessy ended the night with 30 points, four threes, and a handful of boards. Schmitz was bend him with six points and one trey. Centralia was led by Quinten Alderfer with 17 to end the night with Reinecke trailing him with 13.
