The Doniphan West Mustang Boys received a bye for the first time in eight years (2018, the year they last won the TVL tournament), with the bye they took on the Blue Valley Randolph Rams in the second round of TVL tournament play last night, and came away with a huge win after what was a long defensive stalemate. The win for Doniphan West was their first victory over Blue Valley since 2018, also a part of the same season as the TVL tournament victory, and also ending a nine game losing streak to the Rams.
Blue Valley struck first in the opening quarter with a three from Aeron Innes, only to be responded with a three from Doniphan West in Kayson Keller, who’d shortly later in the quarter take the lead 4-3 from the free-throw line. Blue Valley would end the first quarter back ahead 8-4 and go up to 10-4 before the Mustangs would score again. The first half would end 14-12 with the Rams only ahead by a narrow margin. Doniphan West’s scoring was 75% made up beyond the arc in the first half with two threes coming in the second quarter from Dustin Veach.
Blue Valley stayed ahead heading into the fourth quarter after a quiet third quarter by both teams, with the Rams outscoring the Mustangs 8-5 in the quarter, heading into the fourth up 22-17. Doniphan West would then lock it down in the fourth quarter, and with the assistance of Dustin Veach coming back in from the locker room after taking a bloody hit to the nose and switching his jersey from 12 to 21, he only hit dimes in the fourth quarter. Veach hit three threes in the fourth quarter and scored 10 total points in the quarter. The Mustangs outpaced the Rams 17-1 in the final eight minutes of the game with Micheal Albers and Kayson Keller both splitting four rebounds a piece in the quarter.
Veach would end the night with 16 points and five threes, having the best offensive performance of the defensive game by far.
Doniphan West will now take on Axtell (2-Seed) on Thursday at 7:30 PM, with coverage continuing in 92.1 KMZA
