Former Sabetha Bluejay, Alexis McAfee Finding Hoops Success at Washburn
Alexis McAfee

Some opportunities may not work out the way one hopes but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on your dream and passion. Former Sabetha Bluejay, Alexis McAfee is a good case of that as she after a great high school basketball career committed to play college basketball at Wayne State but it proved not to be the right spot and McAfee’s passion for the game led to another opportunity at Washburn.

McAfee transferred into the Washburn Ichabod women’s basketball program after her freshman season at Wayne State and has jumped right into the fold for the Ichabods. Washburn has opened the 2017-18 season 3-0 and the former Sabetha Bluejay has started all three games averaging 9.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and three steals per game. Game two of the season against University of Mary was McAfee’s best performance in college as she posted 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the win.

Washburn got ready for the upcoming season by playing the #3 ranked NCAA Division I team in Baylor in exhibition play and while the lady Ichabods lost McAfee did register 14 points in the contest.

At Wayne State McAfee in her first year at college saw action in 16 games and tallied 11 total points, five rebounds and five assists over the season.

In high school McAfee helped guide the lady Bluejays to a Class 3A State runner-up finish in her senior year a season in which Alexis averaged 13.1 points per game. She earned first team All-State and first team All-Big Seven honors her senior year, while also being named Northeast Kansas All-Star game MVP and named a KBCA All-Star. McAfee averaged double figures all four of years in high school playing at the varsity level and was a three-sport athlete.

McAfee looks to continue to take advantage of her opportunity at Washburn and help the Ichabods to a strong season on the basketball court.
