Axtell & Centralia Runners win Onaga CC Invite
By Mike Smith

Kanzaland area teams and cross country runners continue to dominate in cross country action. This past week at the Onaga cross country Invite it was Axtell and Centralia individual runners capturing another meet crown for themselves this season in a meet that featured 11 different schools with runners.

In the girls competition, it was one of the top runners in her class in the state, Axtell Eagle, Audrey Schmitz winning another meet this season with a time of 16:48.20. While, on the boys side it was Centralia Panther, Lukas Koch racing his way to victory, yet again this season, also.

The girls competition featured 50 runners and Schmitz was able to capture the crown by almost a full minute over the second place finisher form Rock Creek. The rest of the top 10 featured four other Kanzaland area runners in the girls competition on the day, with two in the top five. Washington Counties, Madison Stone had another solid finish this year taking third place (17:43.60), while Jackson Heights Cobra, Kaitlynn Little took home fourth place (18:14.50). Centralia's, Julia Kluta finished seventh place (19:03.50) and Schmitz's, Axtell Eagle teammate, Susan Peschel placed tenth (19:27.60).

On the boys side it was two gentlemen who are very familiar with each other when it comes to running against each other, between Adam and Lukas Koch. Centralia's, Lukas Koch (16:39.93) took the crown but it was a tight race with Adam Koch (16:47.60) who finished second, in a race that featured 70 plus runners. The top five in the boys competition was full of Kanzaland area runners with Washington County Tiger, Dylan Hodgson (17:25.01) taking third and Axtell Eagles, Tracy Schmitz (17:45.29) and Shane Torrey (18:24.150 racing to fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively. Two other area athletes finished in the top 10, also with Eric Mellenbrunch of Jackson Heights taking seventh (18:41.85) and Michael Eisenbarth of Onaga (18:54.26) finishing tenth.

Overall it yet again was a highlight filled cross country meet for the Kanzaland area athletes.
