Highland 35, Iowa Central 3

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Highland, the Scotties used a dominant third quarter and sufficating defense to win their fourth straight game and improve to 5-2 on the season.  After a trio of first half turnovers, the Scotties needed a late two-minute drive and touchdown pass from backup sophomore quarterback, Kyle Todd to Bob Pugh to take a 7-3 lead into the locker room.

Todd would go on to be the offensive star of the day as Highland scored on four straight drives to start the third quarter.  Todd found Troy Grant on a five-yard TD strike, then hooked up with John Becker on a nine-yard touchdown pass.  Todd then used his legs to scramble for a 31 yard touchdown run before the final score was a Todd pass to Danta Starks from 15 yards to make it 35-3 with :43 left in the third quarter.

Todd was 20 of 27 on the day passing for 194 yards while 14 different players caught a pass.  Todd also ran for 58 yards while churning the offense to 17 first downs.  Besides the four players that caught a touchdown pass, Austin Moses had 26 yards on 3 catches, Steve Williams had 42 yards on 4 receptions and Jaqwuan Stone had 19 yards on 3 catches.

The Scottie defense (#1 in the Jayhawk Conference) was superb throughout the game and allowed just over 200 yards of total offense.  They turned Iowa Central away three times in the redzone and had 11 tackles for loss including a handful of sacks.  For the season, the defense is allowing just 17 points per game.

The Scotties (5-2 overall) have a 2-1 record in the Jayhawk Conference and have four games remaining against top conference foes.  HCC takes a four game winning streak to undefeated Hutchinson (7-0) this week before another game at Coffeyville, then home games against Butler County and Dodge City to end the regular season.  The Scotties, under first-year Head Coach Aaron Arnold, are trying to improve on last years 6-4 record and return to the playoffs in 2014.
